Nearly 9,300 children under 5 in Gaza were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition in October, UNICEF warned on Saturday, Anadolu reports.

“High levels of malnutrition continue to endanger the lives and wellbeing of children in the Gaza Strip, compounded by the onset of winter weather accelerating the spread of disease and increasing the risk of death among the most vulnerable children,” the UN agency said in a statement on its website.

According to UNICEF, nutrition screenings carried out by the agency and its partners last month “identified almost 9,300 children under 5 years of age with acute malnutrition in October.”

The agency said large quantities of winter supplies remain stuck at Gaza’s borders and called for the safe, rapid and unobstructed delivery of humanitarian aid into the territory.

“As winter weather sets in, thousands of displaced families remain in makeshift shelters without warm clothes, blankets or protection from the elements, while heavy rains have washed waste and sewage through floodwaters and into populated areas,” it added.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said that “despite progress, thousands of children under the age of five remain acutely malnourished in Gaza, while many more lack proper shelter, sanitation and protection against winter,” the statement noted.

“Too many children in Gaza are still facing hunger, illness and exposure to cold temperatures, conditions that are putting their lives at risk. Every minute counts to protect these children,” she said.

Russell also called for the opening of all crossings into the Gaza Strip, with simplified and expedited clearance procedures and the clear prioritization of the entry of humanitarian supplies, allowing humanitarian relief to move through all feasible supply routes, including via Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank.

The warning came despite the ceasefire, which took effect in October, as Gaza faces growing humanitarian pressures. The government media office said Wednesday that a recent winter storm damaged about 22,000 tents sheltering displaced families and left more than 288,000 households without protection from cold and rain.

Authorities in Gaza estimate that the territory needs roughly 300,000 tents and prefabricated housing units to meet the most basic shelter requirements for Palestinians, after Israel destroyed civilian infrastructure during two years of war.

Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed nearly 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and injured more than 170,900 people in the over two-year war that has left much of the enclave in ruins.

UNICEF said on Tuesday essential items including syringes to vaccinate children and bottles for baby formula are being denied entry into Gaza by Israel, preventing aid agencies from reaching those in need in the war-devastated territory, Reuters reported.

As UNICEF undertakes a mass children’s vaccination campaign with a fragile ceasefire in place, it said it faces serious challenges getting 1.6 million syringes and solar-powered fridges to store vaccine vials into Gaza. The syringes have awaited customs clearance since August, UNICEF said.

“Both the syringes and the … refrigerators are considered dual-use by Israel and these items we’re finding very hard to get them through clearances and inspections, yet they are urgent,” UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires said.

“Dual-use” refers to items Israel deems to have possible military as well as civilian applications.

COGAT, the arm of the Israeli military that oversees aid flows into Gaza, said that Israel does not prevent the entry of syringes or refrigeration-related equipment. In relation to dual-use items it said that it exercises particular caution to ensure Hamas does not “cynically exploit the aid for its own military buildup.” It said it offers international organizations “alternative solutions” for the entry of the required aid, but did not provide further detail.

Hundreds of trucks carrying food, water, fuel, gas, medicines, medical equipment, tents, and shelter supplies enter the Gaza Strip every day, COGAT said, in close coordination with the UN.

UNICEF launched the first of three rounds of catch-up immunisations on Sunday to reach over 40,000 children under three who missed routine vaccines against polio, measles and pneumonia, following two years of war in Gaza.

On the first day of the campaign, it reached over 2,400 children with multiple vaccines.

“The vaccination campaign has started, but we have two rounds to go, and for that we need more supplies,” Pires said.

UNICEF said more humanitarian aid is getting into Gaza but some critical items continued to be denied entry by Israeli authorities, including 938,000 bottles of ready-to-use infant formula and spare parts for water trucks.

“That’s nearly one million bottles that could be reaching children who have been suffering from different levels of malnutrition,” Pires told a news briefing in Geneva.

The 10 October truce was meant to unleash a massive surge of aid across the enclave, but relief agencies have repeatedly said not enough is getting in to meet the needs of a largely displaced and malnourished population of 2 million.

The UN agencies, including UNICEF, UNRWA, World Health Organization (WHO), and partners, in collaboration with the Palestinian Health Ministry, are launching an integrated catch-up campaign for routine immunization, nutrition, and growth monitoring in Gaza to reach 44,000 children cut off from essential life-saving services by two years of conflict, Anadolu reports.

According to a joint statement released on Wednesday, the campaign will be implemented in three rounds to reach children with three doses of pentavalent, polio, rotavirus, and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines and two doses of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.

The first round of the campaign will take place from Nov. 9 to Nov. 18.

An estimated “1 in 5 children under three years of age are either zero-dose or have missed vaccinations because of the conflict,” increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. The catch-up campaign aims, the statement said, to provide these children with routine childhood vaccines that protect against measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, polio, rotavirus, and pneumonia.

“To help address the devastating impacts of the conflict on children’s health and nutrition, UNICEF and partners will also screen these children for malnutrition and ensure those identified with malnutrition receive treatment and ongoing follow-up. Children with complications due to moderate and severe acute malnutrition will be treated at WHO-supported inpatient stabilization centers,” it said.

“After two years of relentless violence that claimed the lives of more than 20,000 children in the Gaza Strip, we finally have an opportunity to protect those who survived,” Jonathan Veitch, UNICEF special representative in Palestine, said. “Vaccinating every child, and supporting their health and nutrition, is not just a humanitarian intervention; it is a moral imperative.”

UNICEF has delivered all vaccines, syringes, cold chain equipment and nutrition supplies to Gaza, with vaccinations set to take place at 149 health facilities and 10 mobile vehicles, according to the statement. More than 450 health workers and support staff have been trained.

“This immunization campaign is a lifeline, protecting children’s health and restoring hope for the future,” Richard Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the occupied Palestinian territory, said for his part.

The agencies stressed that the campaign’s success depends on the full respect of the ceasefire to allow safe access to vaccination and nutrition services. The onset of harsh winter conditions makes this campaign even more urgent, as deadly but preventable childhood diseases spread across the Gaza Strip, they warned.

Phases two and three of the campaign, which aim to provide the children with second and third doses of the vaccines, are planned for December 2025 and January 2026, respectively.

Before the conflict, Gaza maintained 54 immunization facilities and ranked “among the top” globally with an overall 98% vaccination coverage rate for children. Today, the statement said, 31 facilities are no longer operational after being damaged or destroyed in indiscriminate attacks, while the routine vaccination coverage rate has dropped below 70%.

More than one million children in Gaza are still in urgent need of food and clean water, while 650,000 remain out of school despite the ongoing ceasefire, UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram said on Sunday.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ingram said that while the ceasefire agreement has stopped the daily bombardments that were killing children, “it is not enough on its own to end hunger or guarantee families access to safe drinking water.”

She warned that thousands of children in Gaza continue to go to bed hungry each night, as infrastructure critical to water, sanitation, and healthcare remains in ruins. “Families in Gaza continue to struggle daily to survive,” she said, adding that damage to essential facilities has made access to basic services “extremely difficult.”

The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, brokered by US President Donald Trump, went into effect on 10th October. However, Israeli forces have been accused of multiple violations since then, resulting in additional Palestinian casualties and continued restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the enclave.

‘No time to lose’: UN agencies call for immediate humanitarian access to famine-declared Gaza

UN agencies on Friday warned that famine is already claiming lives in Gaza and urged immediate humanitarian access and a ceasefire, stressing that children are at acute risk of starvation, Anadolu reports.

The joint statement of The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Program (WFP), UNICEF and World Health Organization (WHO) came following the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification’s (IPC) declaration of famine in Gaza Governorate, one of the five regions of the Gaza Strip, where Israel has killed nearly 62,200 Palestinians since October 2023.

The global hunger monitor also projected that famine will spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis within weeks.

FAO said people in Gaza have run out of survival options, with hunger and malnutrition now killing daily, and the destruction of cropland, livestock, fisheries, and other food systems worsening the crisis.

“Our priority must now be safe and sustained access for large-scale food assistance,” FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu Qu said, adding that access to food is “not a privilege – it is a basic human right.”

The WFP, for its part, noted that famine warnings had been clear for months.

WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain said what is needed now is a surge of aid, safer conditions on the ground, and effective distribution networks to reach everyone in need.

Full humanitarian access and a ceasefire now are critical to save lives,” she added.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said: “As we have repeatedly warned, the signs were unmistakable: children with wasted bodies, too weak to cry or eat; babies dying from hunger and preventable disease; parents arriving at clinics with nothing left to feed their children.”

“There is no time to lose,” she said, warning that without an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access, famine will spread and more children will die. Russell added that children on the brink of starvation need the therapeutic feeding that UNICEF provides.

For his part, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called a ceasefire “an absolute and moral imperative,” saying the world had waited too long while tragic and unnecessary deaths mounted from what he described as a “man-made famine.”

He warned that widespread malnutrition is making even common illnesses fatal, especially for children, and that Gaza’s health system, run by “hungry and exhausted health workers,” is unable to cope.

“Gaza must be urgently supplied with food and medicines to save lives and begin the process of reversing malnutrition,” he said, stressing that hospitals must be protected, aid blockages must end, and “peace must be restored, so that healing can begin.”
