Morning Star: Despite both parties’ political backsliding, Britain must take responsibility over climate change

AS heatwaves and wildfires sweep across swathes of southern Europe, north Africa and North America, today’s report from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) rang timely alarm bells.

WWA scientists predict that highly inflammatory temperatures of up to 45°C (Palermo has just reached 47°C) should no longer be regarded as unusual.

They estimate that heatwaves of the kind we have seen this July can be expected to recur around once every 15 years in North America, every 10 years in Europe and every five years in China.

Moreover, they warn that if the planet’s temperatures rise by another 1°C, on top of the 1°C increase since the late 19th century, heatwaves and wildfires will strike even more frequently.

Underlying these projections is the certainty — supported by an Everest-sized pile of scientific evidence and shared by almost all climate scientists and their professional organisations — that human activity is by far the biggest cause of global warming.

Yet the Westminster government and the Labour opposition have spent the past week — of all weeks — diluting the case and the policies for meeting Britain’s net-zero emissions target by 2050.

The Conservatives favour the exploitation of new oil, gas and coal sources while blocking onshore wind developments. With Labour’s support, they are pushing ahead with a major rearmament programme. As the Scientists for Global Responsibility point out in their invaluable report, The Environmental Impacts of the UK Military Sector (2020), the production, testing and use of armaments contribute hugely to greenhouse gas emissions — yet the figures are concealed from the public and excluded from official statistics by Britain and many other states.

The Labour leadership has announced the postponement of its Green Investment Plan even before winning a general election and taking office.

Instead of explaining the need for ultra-low emission zones (Ulez) based on genuine local consultation and support for people’s jobs and living standards, Keir Starmer blames London’s Labour mayor and Ulez for the party’s defeat in a parliamentary by-election.

Study Warns Climate-Driven Collapse of Critical Ocean Current System ‘Much Closer Than We Thought’

“It is very plausible that we’ve fallen off a cliff already and don’t know it,” said one researcher.

The system of Atlantic Ocean currents that drive warm water from the tropics toward Europe is at risk of collapsing in the coming decades, an analysis of 150 years of temperature data published Tuesday concluded.

“The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which includes the Gulf Stream, is a major tipping element in the climate system and a future collapse would have severe impacts on the climate in the North Atlantic region,” states the study, which was published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

Although the analysis notes that “assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), based on the Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) model simulations suggest that a full collapse is unlikely within the 21st century,” the study’s authors “estimate a collapse of the AMOC to occur around mid-century under the current scenario of future emissions.”

“We show that a transition of the AMOC is most likely to occur around 2025-2095,” the paper states with “95% confidence.”

University of Copenhagen professor Peter Ditlevsen, who led the study, told The Guardian: “I think we should be very worried. This would be a very, very large change. The AMOC has not been shut off for 12,000 years.”

Bill McKibben, co-founder of the climate action group 350.orgtweeted that “Gulf Stream collapse used to be viewed as a far-off and remote possibility… Less so now.”

Meteorologist and climate journalist Eric Holthaus called the study’s findings “incredibly worrying.”

The Washington Postreports:

The new study adds to a growing body of evidence that this crucial ocean system is in peril. Since 2004, observations from a network of ocean buoys [have shown] the AMOC getting weaker—though the limited time frame of that data set makes it hard to establish a trend. Scientists have also analyzed multiple “proxy” indicators of the current’s strength, including microscopic organisms and tiny sediments from the seafloor, to show the system is in its weakest state in more than 1,000 years.

For thousands of years, the Gulf Stream has carried warm waters from the Gulf of Mexico northward along the eastern North American seaboard and across the Atlantic to Europe. As human-caused global heating melts the Greenland ice sheet, massive quantities of fresh water are released into the North Atlantic, cooling the AMOC—which delivers the bulk of the Gulf Stream’s heat—toward a “tipping point” that could stop the current in its tracks.

According toThe Guardian:

A collapse of AMOC would have disastrous consequences around the world, severely disrupting the rains that billions of people depend on for food in India, South America, and West Africa. It would increase storms and drop temperatures in Europe, and lead to a rising sea level on the eastern coast of North America. It would also further endanger the Amazon rainforest and Antarctic ice sheets.

“It is very plausible that we’ve fallen off a cliff already and don’t know it,” Hali Kilbourne, an associate research professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, toldThe New York Times. “I fear, honestly, that by the time any of this is settled science, it’s way too late to act.”

Other studies—including one published in March and another in 2021—have also concluded that the AMOC is at risk of collapsing this century.

Meanwhile in the Southern Hemisphere, Antarctic currents that enrich 40% of Earth’s deep oceans with oxygen and nutrients essential for marine life have slowed dangerously in recent decades and could also collapse by mid-century, an Australian study released in May showed.

‘Lord Frost, made all the denialist tropes.’

The Tories have once more shown how they couldn’t give a damn about climate change, even as devastating heat waves take place across Europe, after a Tory peer made the absurd claim that ‘global warming is likely to be beneficial to the UK’.

Former minister Lord Frost made the comments in the House of Lords, where he said: “We should dig in deeper and ask: what are the consequences of hotter, drier summers and warmer, wetter winters?

“At the moment, seven times as many people die from cold as from heat in Britain. Rising temperatures are likely to be beneficial.”

He also urged the UK to adapt to climate change rather than trying to mitigate its effects, this despite the fact that last year saw recorded temperatures of over 40C for the first time as well as numerous wildfires and a record number of heat-related deaths.

Frost told peers that the UK should adapt to the warming climate “so we can adjust to the perfectly manageable consequences of slowly rising temperatures as they emerge”.

Rishi Sunak Warned Watering Down Net Zero “Will Not Help” Tory Party Prospects

A co-author of the Conservative party’s 2019 manifesto has urged Rishi Sunak to stick with the government’s net zero pledge, warning that watering it down and indulging sceptics will not be a vote winner at the general election.

Rachel Wolf, who wrote the party’s general election-winning manifesto four years ago, and is now a founding partner at consultancy Public First, said there was a “massive risk” of ministers “overinterpreting and misinterpreting” the Tory party by-election win Uxbridge and South Ruislip, where debates about environmental policy dominated the campaign.

The Conservatives’ surprise win in the west London seat last week, where the Tories held onto Boris Johnson’s former Uxbridge constituency with a majority of just 495, subsequently prompted a debate among Conservative MPs about whether the result was evidence that the public wants the government to dilute its plans for achieving net zero by the year 2050. Conservative campaigners had framed the vote for Tory candidate Steve Tuckwell to appeal to significant local opposition to  London mayor Sadiq Khan expanding the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ)

“There is a massive risk of overinterpreting and misinterpreting the Uxbridge result,” she said.

“There’s a big difference between a policy lke ULEZ, which people can see comes with very tangible costs and feel is unfair, which you can argue is true, and the general net zero policies, many of which don’t have those.

“More importantly, people remain very supportive of net zero and climate policy, and there have been lots of policies over the last twenty years that have come with costs but haven’t caused big electoral issues.”
