Pressure is mounting on local governments and public pharmacies to replace Teva products with alternatives not complicit in Israel’s occupation and genocide.

Israeli pharmaceutical giant Teva is facing mounting pressure from Palestine solidarity groups across Europe. One of Israel’s largest drugs manufacturers and a major global producer of generic medicines, Teva has actively supported the genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 2023 and contributed to the erosion of Palestinian healthcare long before that, Giorgia Gusciglio, Europe Coordinator for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Campaigns at the Palestinian BDS National Committee, told People’s Health Dispatch.

Last year, as Gaza’s health services and workers faced near-total annihilation from Israeli attacks, Teva reported over USD 16.5 billion in revenue. Part of that revenue comes from the Palestinian market, where the company profits from the double standards imposed by the apartheid regime.

In contrast to Palestinian pharmaceutical producers, who face severe restrictions, prolonged import procedures, and arbitrary “dual-use” designations for essential components, Teva is free to market its products in the occupied territories, many times without adapting packaging or documentation. According to sources collected by BDS Italy, the company even sells medicines in boxes and with instruction leaflets not translated into Arabic.

The exploitation of pharmaceutical needs in occupied territories is not unique to Teva or the time since 2023. The 2012 report “Captive economy: The pharmaceutical industry and the Israeli occupation” concluded that “all Israeli pharmaceutical companies sell their products on the Palestinian market and profit from it, without paying any price for the occupation and its damage.”

A matter of Palestine solidarity and access to medicines

Beyond usurping the Palestinian market, Teva also holds an important share of Europe’s pharmaceutical landscape: not only through its large generics portfolio, but also through proprietary products for multiple sclerosis and cancer. The contradiction between Teva’s stated “commitment toward better health” and its well-documented complicity in war crimes has driven the growth of groups mobilizing to boycott and expose the company. As Gusciglio explains, these initiatives vary by country: in Ireland they have a strong trade union dimension, while in Belgium and Italy, they are primarily led by BDS chapters and activist networks. But the local campaigns still share the same goal – securing justice for Palestine.

A key moment in achieving that goal is reaching out to patients and medics. Throughout the genocide, BDS Italy has been working closely with the local collective Health Workers for Gaza (Sanitari per Gaza), achieving major milestones. According to activists who spoke with People’s Health Dispatch, one of their first actions under the Teva boycott campaign was to distribute leaflets in front of pharmacies to raise awareness among patients and pharmacists about the company’s role in the genocide. “All activists took responsibility for visiting a pharmacy, arranging meetings with the chemist, and trying to raise awareness about boycotting Teva products,” the activists explained. The same approach was extended to general practitioners and, by now, the understanding of Teva’s complicity has grown significantly among health professionals and patients alike, BDS Italy members said.

The campaign then moved to engage professional associations and pressure local governments to suspend purchases of Teva products in public pharmacies. Over recent months, several municipalities have responded, issuing guidance for pharmacies under their jurisdiction to seek alternatives. “Teva sells mostly generics, but there are also some drugs that it developed itself and are therefore not replaceable,” BDS Italy activists note. “It’s important to emphasize that we call for suspending purchases except in the case of medicines that are essential or cannot be substituted.”

The fact that some Teva products are not replaceable is often used as a misleading argument against the boycott. In reality, it points to systemic problems in the global pharmaceutical and patent system more than it identifies a concrete issue within the BDS call. One example of this is Copaxone, Teva’s multiple sclerosis treatment. Even Israel’s trusted ally, the European Union, called out the company’s attempts to shield itself from competition by artificially extending the drug’s patent protection. Through such actions, BDS Italy pointed out, Teva has likely inflated public health expenditures for multiple sclerosis drugs, with Copaxone alone costing about €500 million a year in 2022. Efforts to mobilize for alternatives to Teva’s products therefore represent a possible meeting point between Palestine solidarity and public pharma initiatives, opening the door to more just and accessible health systems.

Italian municipalities adopt guidance to replace Teva

“The first local administration to issue a recommendation to move away from Teva products was Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence,” BDS Italy activists noted. “They were soon attacked by the media, accused of antisemitism and mismanaging public funds. Some claimed that Teva drugs are cheaper, and that discouraging their purchase would raise costs for patients and the health system.”

Despite such attacks, an increasing number of municipalities have since joined the boycott call, including in Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Marche, and Trentino-Alto Adige. While many have urged public pharmacies to look for substitutes for Teva products, others have opted for different approaches.

In Rovereto, after a successful grassroots campaign, the local government asked pharmacies to display infographics informing customers that they have the right to choose safe, effective alternatives to Teva products.

While more municipalities in Italy are discussing similar moves, the global BDS campaign and the European Legal Support Center (ELSC) are considering support for municipalities wishing to introduce ethical public procurement in line with EU legislation as well as human rights standards. Meanwhile, campaigners in Europe are keeping up the pressure, turning to, among other things, Teva’s presence in hospital pharmacies and its attempts to whitewash its image through initiatives like the Humanizing Health Awards. Activists are also continuing their partnerships with health workers’ collectives, such as the Health Workers for Gaza fasting action held in Italy earlier this year, while expanding international networks.

Their campaigns might already be showing signs of success. While the company proudly reported its 2024 revenue, it was more restrained about the fact that it had also recorded net losses amounting to 1.4 billion dollars in the first nine months of the year alone. As BDS Italy noted, “Israel’s genocidal assault since October 2023 and its various consequences could be considered potential factors influencing these results.”

Experiencing issues with this image not appearing. I suspect because it's so critical of Zionist Keir Starmer's support of and complicity in Israel's genocides.
Genocide denier and Current UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is quoted that he supports Zionism without qualification. He also confirms that UK air force support has been essential in Israel’s mass-murdering genocide. Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and other Republican lawmakers launch direct attack against organizations standing with Palestine

On September 25, Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson took to social media to attack several pro-Palestine organizations, which have been leading in the solidarity movement across the United States. Johnson referenced the action taken by the United States House Committee on Ways and Means, led by conservative Representative Jason Smith, which has called on the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of eight organizations. According to Smith, these organizations have “organized and subsidized illegal activity on college campuses and beyond and have potentially provided support to terrorist organizations overseas.”

The eight organizations are the Alliance for Global Justice, the Westchester Peace Action Committee Foundation, Jewish Voice for Peace, Islamic Relief USA, United Hands Relief, the Peoples Forum, Tides, and Americans for Justice in Palestine Educational Foundation.

“[Jason Smith] and [House Republicans] are putting you on notice. Your tax-exempt status should be revoked immediately,” Johnson said.

Some organizations have responded to these attacks and rejecting what they call political persecution. The Peoples Forum, a New York City based social movement center, was accused by the Ways and Means Committee of engaging “in conduct directly intended to incite riots, cause chaos, and disrupt education on college and university campuses and beyond, all despite its stated tax-exempt purpose and mission designed to support the working class.”

“This conduct is designed to sow chaos and discord in our society, has involved illegal activities, and certainly is not in furtherance of any tax-exempt purpose,” the accusation continues.

The People’s Forum wrote in a statement, “Right-wing Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson has joined other Republican leaders in a major political attack designed to criminalize dissent, and silence those who oppose the Israeli genocide in Gaza. The allegations are “reminiscent of the worst part of the McCarthy Era,” the organization wrote.

Peoples Dispatch speaks to US veterans who are standing against their government’s complicity in genocide and organizing more to do the same

On February 25, US Air Force member Aaron Bushnell became the first active duty US soldier to earn the title of “martyr” among oppressed people worldwide. The 25-year-old set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC in protest of the US government’s complicity in the genocide in Gaza, declaring, “this is what our ruling class has decided will be normal,” before self-immolating.

Bushnell’s sacrifice was the most high-profile action by member of the US army in solidarity with Palestine and signaled an enormous sea change among active duty military as well as veterans—who are increasingly taking a bold step to denounce their government’s involvement in genocide.

According to Mike Prysner, who was an active duty soldier during the Iraq War and has been organizing veterans and active duty military ever since, the momentum among current and former members of the US military “hasn’t been this high since the Bush era.”

Prysner recently authored an article for Empire Files on the dozens of active duty US soldiers quitting the US military over Gaza

“The sector of service members who have turned against the US/Israeli policy in a profound way is undoubtedly much bigger than we can see at the moment—one the Pentagon is no doubt aware of as well,” Prysner wrote.

As Prysner told Peoples Dispatch, although the anti-war veterans movement is not as big as it was during the Iraq invasions, it is significant that veterans are organizing at such a high level today because unlike Iraq, the genocide in Palestine is “not a direct US war.”

“Most service members haven’t had direct experience with supporting Israel,” Prysner said. “They’re just disgusted by the fact that the military they served in and are serving in is playing a support and a propaganda role.”

However, Prysner notices significant anti-war momentum in the US Air Force in particular, which “does have more of a direct role in the other branches” in Gaza, in terms of “all the logistics that Israel needs” to carry out genocide. “I have noticed the active duty of the Air Force becoming more engaged because of their direct role,” Prysner says, including Bushnell.

“The potential for there to be unrest within the military is historically something that plays a major impact in adding to the pressure on Washington to end the war,” Prysner told Peoples Dispatch.

Shortly after Bushnell’s self-immolation, Prysner worked with other veterans of the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars to organize an action in Portland in which former US military members burned their uniforms collectively in protest. This type of action was later repeated throughout the country as other veterans and active duty military drew inspiration from the momentum

Veterans in Portland, Oregan also recently organized a massive projection of anti-war imagery on a US Navy warship docked for “Fleet Week”. The images had slogans such as “Stop the US war machine” and “Blood is on your hands”.

Not only do veterans organizing within the anti-war movement inspire active duty military to take further action as well, but they also galvanize the entire anti-imperialist movement, says Prysner. He references the contingent of veterans who attended the recent 100,000-strong protest in front of the White House on June 8. Prysner noticed “a lot of excitement among the attendees” of the protest that veterans had mobilized.

On June 8, Peoples Dispatch spoke to two of the veterans who attended the mass mobilization in front of the White House to declare a “people’s red line” against genocide. Adrian served in the Air Force from 2002 to 2009, and went to Iraq. He now openly identifies as both an anti-imperialist and Marxist, organizing with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and credits his time in the military as contributing to his shift in consciousness.

“War is a profit-making business,” US vet declares

“As a person who served in the United States Air Force, I’m very familiar with how the imperialist war machine works. Naturally, this isn’t something that one joins the military knowing. It was part of the whole radicalization process for me, being in the military, realizing that it functions very much like a corporate entity, and that war is a profit-making business,” Adrian told Peoples Dispatch

“It was part of my being a working class person in the military, coming from the background that I came from, going to a foreign country to fight other poor and oppressed people, that created such a cognitive dissonance in me, that I had to address it in some sort of way.”

Adrian continued, “there are many things that active duty people, reservists and guardsmen can do. They can conscientiously object and thus separate from the military, but they can also organize outside of the military. They can attend rallies. They can organize with professional revolutionary organizations such as our own. They can do many other things to raise consciousness and awareness among their fellow servicemen.”

Chris Stevens, who was an infantryman in the US Army from 2007 and 2013, told Peoples Dispatch what his message is to prospective, current, and former service members who are disgusted by US complicity in genocide.

“Don’t be seduced in the first place. If you’ve yet to sign a contract, you should turn the other way. Your recruiter’s lying to you about everything, whether it be the job that you can have or the life that you’ll lead, the benefits that they promise you are not cast in stone and they will take anything they can from you,” Stevens said, referencing the predatory US military recruitment process.

Military recruiters in the US notoriously prey on working class and oppressed youth to lead them into military careers, luring them with promises of free college education. This phenomenon is part of what anti-war activists dub the “poverty draft,” in which poor young people have few opportunities apart from joining the US military, risking life and limb, and participating in the imperialist machine.

“For those who are already involved, my message is that you don’t have to listen to what they tell you to do,” Stevens continued. “There are significant historical examples from the Vietnam and Iraq wars, where entire units have decided to say no to their orders. As long as it’s not you alone resisting, if you can get a squad or a company together to say, we will not participate in this, there’s not much that the army can do.”

“So if you’re in a position where you are actively supporting this genocide that’s happening in Israel, you don’t have to,” Stevens said.

The issue of Palestine was particularly galvanizing, as Adrian mentioned: “I don’t want to see children murdered anymore. This is beyond the pale of what can be justified in the name of nationalism, in the name of anything that would be any semblance of what one would call the sovereignty of a so-called nation. The self-determination of the Palestinian people is paramount to humanity. And their fight is our fight.”

Peoples Dispatch speaks to Munir Marwan, a longtime Palestine solidarity organizer and PYM member about PYM’s latest demands, which include an end to occupation, the release of all Palestinian political prisoners, and ending Western complicity in Zionism

The entire Palestine solidarity movement in North America has united behind the demand of a ceasefire in Gaza. For the first time in years, organizations of the working class such as labor unions have been united against the status quo of Western foreign policy and taken an unprecedented stance against Israeli violence.

At the same time, important sectors in the movement have been trying to push the demands even further. The Palestinian Youth Movement, a major international formation of Palestinian youth with significant presence across North America, has been working to push the movement beyond dreaming of an end to current aggression, and into demanding full liberation from Israeli occupation.

To talk about PYM’s latest demands, which include an end to occupation, the release of all Palestinian political prisoners, and ending Western complicity in Zionism, Peoples Dispatch speaks to Munir Marwan, a longtime Palestine solidarity organizer and PYM member.
