Europe’s Palestine solidarity movement strengthens call to boycott Israeli pharmaceutical company Teva

Pressure is mounting on local governments and public pharmacies to replace Teva products with alternatives not complicit in Israel’s occupation and genocide.

Israeli pharmaceutical giant Teva is facing mounting pressure from Palestine solidarity groups across Europe. One of Israel’s largest drugs manufacturers and a major global producer of generic medicines, Teva has actively supported the genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 2023 and contributed to the erosion of Palestinian healthcare long before that, Giorgia Gusciglio, Europe Coordinator for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Campaigns at the Palestinian BDS National Committee, told People’s Health Dispatch.

Last year, as Gaza’s health services and workers faced near-total annihilation from Israeli attacks, Teva reported over USD 16.5 billion in revenue. Part of that revenue comes from the Palestinian market, where the company profits from the double standards imposed by the apartheid regime.

In contrast to Palestinian pharmaceutical producers, who face severe restrictions, prolonged import procedures, and arbitrary “dual-use” designations for essential components, Teva is free to market its products in the occupied territories, many times without adapting packaging or documentation. According to sources collected by BDS Italy, the company even sells medicines in boxes and with instruction leaflets not translated into Arabic.

The exploitation of pharmaceutical needs in occupied territories is not unique to Teva or the time since 2023. The 2012 report “Captive economy: The pharmaceutical industry and the Israeli occupation” concluded that “all Israeli pharmaceutical companies sell their products on the Palestinian market and profit from it, without paying any price for the occupation and its damage.”

A matter of Palestine solidarity and access to medicines

Beyond usurping the Palestinian market, Teva also holds an important share of Europe’s pharmaceutical landscape: not only through its large generics portfolio, but also through proprietary products for multiple sclerosis and cancer. The contradiction between Teva’s stated “commitment toward better health” and its well-documented complicity in war crimes has driven the growth of groups mobilizing to boycott and expose the company. As Gusciglio explains, these initiatives vary by country: in Ireland they have a strong trade union dimension, while in Belgium and Italy, they are primarily led by BDS chapters and activist networks. But the local campaigns still share the same goal – securing justice for Palestine.

A key moment in achieving that goal is reaching out to patients and medics. Throughout the genocide, BDS Italy has been working closely with the local collective Health Workers for Gaza (Sanitari per Gaza), achieving major milestones. According to activists who spoke with People’s Health Dispatch, one of their first actions under the Teva boycott campaign was to distribute leaflets in front of pharmacies to raise awareness among patients and pharmacists about the company’s role in the genocide. “All activists took responsibility for visiting a pharmacy, arranging meetings with the chemist, and trying to raise awareness about boycotting Teva products,” the activists explained. The same approach was extended to general practitioners and, by now, the understanding of Teva’s complicity has grown significantly among health professionals and patients alike, BDS Italy members said.

The campaign then moved to engage professional associations and pressure local governments to suspend purchases of Teva products in public pharmacies. Over recent months, several municipalities have responded, issuing guidance for pharmacies under their jurisdiction to seek alternatives. “Teva sells mostly generics, but there are also some drugs that it developed itself and are therefore not replaceable,” BDS Italy activists note. “It’s important to emphasize that we call for suspending purchases except in the case of medicines that are essential or cannot be substituted.”

The fact that some Teva products are not replaceable is often used as a misleading argument against the boycott. In reality, it points to systemic problems in the global pharmaceutical and patent system more than it identifies a concrete issue within the BDS call. One example of this is Copaxone, Teva’s multiple sclerosis treatment. Even Israel’s trusted ally, the European Union, called out the company’s attempts to shield itself from competition by artificially extending the drug’s patent protection. Through such actions, BDS Italy pointed out, Teva has likely inflated public health expenditures for multiple sclerosis drugs, with Copaxone alone costing about €500 million a year in 2022. Efforts to mobilize for alternatives to Teva’s products therefore represent a possible meeting point between Palestine solidarity and public pharma initiatives, opening the door to more just and accessible health systems.

Italian municipalities adopt guidance to replace Teva

“The first local administration to issue a recommendation to move away from Teva products was Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence,” BDS Italy activists noted. “They were soon attacked by the media, accused of antisemitism and mismanaging public funds. Some claimed that Teva drugs are cheaper, and that discouraging their purchase would raise costs for patients and the health system.”

Despite such attacks, an increasing number of municipalities have since joined the boycott call, including in Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Marche, and Trentino-Alto Adige. While many have urged public pharmacies to look for substitutes for Teva products, others have opted for different approaches.

In Rovereto, after a successful grassroots campaign, the local government asked pharmacies to display infographics informing customers that they have the right to choose safe, effective alternatives to Teva products.

While more municipalities in Italy are discussing similar moves, the global BDS campaign and the European Legal Support Center (ELSC) are considering support for municipalities wishing to introduce ethical public procurement in line with EU legislation as well as human rights standards. Meanwhile, campaigners in Europe are keeping up the pressure, turning to, among other things, Teva’s presence in hospital pharmacies and its attempts to whitewash its image through initiatives like the Humanizing Health Awards. Activists are also continuing their partnerships with health workers’ collectives, such as the Health Workers for Gaza fasting action held in Italy earlier this year, while expanding international networks.

Their campaigns might already be showing signs of success. While the company proudly reported its 2024 revenue, it was more restrained about the fact that it had also recorded net losses amounting to 1.4 billion dollars in the first nine months of the year alone. As BDS Italy noted, “Israel’s genocidal assault since October 2023 and its various consequences could be considered potential factors influencing these results.”

Post-election repression in Tanzania as President Suluhu “wins” with 97.66%

Tanzania’s disputed elections, already clouded by credibility concerns, ended with President Samia Suluhu declared the winner. Authorities have intensified arrests and crackdowns, while opposition leaders claim that thousands were killed during post-election protests.

The October 29, 2025, presidential elections in Tanzania plunged the country into its deepest political crisis in decades. President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner with an overwhelming 97.66% of the vote, a result widely denounced as fraudulent and surrounded by an atmosphere of repression, violence, and systematic silencing of dissent.

In the months leading up to the polls, opposition parties were systematically harassed. Rallies were disrupted, candidates were denied registration, and media outlets critical of the government faced suspension. The banning of CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu from contesting and the arrest of dozens of party members prefigured an electoral process tightly controlled by the state apparatus.

In dialogue with Peoples Dispatch, Muhemsi says, this time round, the popular dissatisfaction was due to the issue of forced disappearances, abductions, as well as the “unfair” detention of some key opposition party leaders, especially Tundu Antipas Lissu, who is being charged with treason. His trial has been going on for months.

A nation under siege

What followed the disputed poll was a wave of protests in Tanzania’s recent history. Demonstrations erupted across major cities, from Dar es Salaam to Arusha and Mwanza, as citizens rejected the results. The government’s response was brutal. Under a nationwide curfew and a total internet shutdown, security forces unleashed a wave of violence against protestors. The opposition claims that thousands were killed or have disappeared, though independent verification remains impossible. Families continue to search for missing relatives, and many speak of a climate of fear and enforced disappearance.

Muhemsi described how Tanzanians have long been told that “no one would dare take to the streets”. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM; “Party of the Revolution”), he said, has relied on the myth of Tanzania being an “Island of Peace” to suppress dissent. “Religious leaders were co-opted into spreading this ‘peace’ gospel, many of their events were literally organized if not funded by the state.”

Opposition leaders detained

In the aftermath, the government has intensified its repression. Hundreds of youth activists have been charged, and opposition leaders continue to face persecution. CHADEMA’s deputy secretary-general, Amani Golugwa, was arrested on November 8 and charged with treason, joining his party leader Tundu Lissu, who was barred from participating in the election and remains imprisoned. Other activists, youths, and human rights defenders have been detained under vague accusations of incitement and subversion.

The president’s inauguration, held behind closed doors, only deepened public outrage at a process that lacks legitimacy. A ceremony, symbolic of a government increasingly disconnected from its people.

Regional and continental reactions

Initially, regional and international reactions followed the pattern of complicity and silence that has long accompanied authoritarian consolidation in Africa. The African Union (AU) was quick to congratulate President Suluhu on her victory, a move that provoked widespread condemnation across the continent. In a reversal, the AU later, after sustained criticism, acknowledged that the elections “had not met the threshold of free and fair democratic values.”

In a statement, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights expressed “deep concern” over the situation, citing grave violations of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which Tanzania ratified in 1984. The Commission condemned reports of mass killings, arbitrary arrests, and the use of live ammunition against peaceful demonstrators, urging the government to “de-escalate the prevailing situation” and investigate the alleged atrocities.

The Commission further called on Tanzania to sign and ratify the “African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance”, emphasizing the need for regular, transparent, and impartial elections – an implicit rebuke of the current regime’s conduct.

Similarly, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), through its Electoral Observation Mission, issued a preliminary report on November 3 stating that the poll fell short of democratic standards. The mission detailed harassment of its own observers, including an incident in Tanga, where security officers seized passports, interrogated monitors, and deleted photographs.

The ongoing repression not only erodes Tanzania’s internal democratic fabric but also threatens to destabilize the wider East African region, where social unrest and economic inequality have become combustible forces.

But despite these condemnations, no tangible measures have followed. The crisis in Tanzania exposes the limits of regional institutions, whose dependence on member states makes them reluctant to call out offending regimes. In effect, regional diplomacy has become the velvet glove around the iron fist of repression, completely detached from the aspirations of the majority of African people.

For Tanzanians, the current moment is one of mourning and resistance. As families continue searching for missing loved ones and opposition leaders and arrested protesters languish in detention. The overwhelming margin of victory – 97.66% – does not symbolize national unity but its absence. Muhmesi concludes that “CCM’s tragedy isn’t just staying in power; it’s that it long abandoned the task of leading Tanzanians away from capitalism. Until we face that truth, there can be no real democracy, no good constitution, because capitalism itself is the constitution of our suffering.”

The US plans to build a $500 million military base in Israel near the Gaza border to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in the Palestinian enclave, Israeli media said Tuesday, Anadolu reports.

The daily Yedioth Ahronoth, citing anonymous Israeli officials, said Washington seeks to establish a large military base in the Gaza border area, which would mark “a significant escalation of US activity in Israel.”

The base would be housing an international task force, which was agreed to be formed under the Gaza ceasefire agreement to monitor the implementation of the truce inside the enclave, the sources said.

Several thousand US soldiers will be stationed in the base, they added.

According to the newspaper, the project would be “the first large-scale American military installation on Israeli territory, underscoring a deepening US commitment to post-war stabilization efforts in Gaza.”

During Tel Aviv’s two years of war in Gaza, the US installed a THAAD missile defense system, which was used in the interception of Iranian missiles and drones during a 12-day conflict with Israel, it added.

“The establishment of an American base on Israeli soil shows just how determined Washington is to be involved in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” an Israeli official told the daily.

Several US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, previously affirmed that there will be “no American boots on the ground in Gaza.”

Currently, 200 US military personnel are stationed in the US-backed Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) in Kiryat Gat in southern Israel to monitor the ceasefire.

According to Israeli officials, the US-led center is expected to take full control of humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza, excluding Israel’s COGAT mechanism.

The Israeli newspaper did not specify the exact location of the planned facility while indicating that surveys are underway on possible sites.

There was no immediate comment from the US or Israel on the report.

The Gaza ceasefire agreement took effect on Oct. 10, based on a 20-point plan by US President Donald Trump.

Phase one of the ceasefire deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israel’s genocidal war has killed more than 69,000 people and injured more than 170,600, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

UNICEF said on Tuesday that 2,400 children in Gaza have already been reached with multiple vaccines on the first day of its ongoing catch-up immunization, nutrition, and health campaign aimed at protecting children who missed routine vaccines during two years of Israeli war, Anadolu reports.

The campaign, carried out with the WHO and partners, targets over 40,000 children under three and will be conducted in three rounds, with the first taking place from Nov. 9-18 and further planned for December and January.

“We have procured 1 million vaccines and got them across and into Gaza to protect children against deadly preventable diseases such as polio, measles and pneumonia,” UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires told journalists in Geneva.

The campaign also includes nutrition screenings and treatment for malnourished children and operates through 149 health facilities and 10 mobile units, supported by more than 450 health workers trained.

Pires emphasized that Gaza once had 98% vaccination coverage and 55 immunization sites, but “coverage has fallen below 70% with 31 vaccination facilities destroyed or damaged.” He described the current effort as “the first step towards restoring pre-conflict vaccination levels and rebuilding Gaza’s damaged health system,” warning that this will require “important and urgent donor support.”

READ: UNICEF concerned for mothers, newborns in Gaza amid intense Israeli attacks, blockade

So far, no security incidents have been reported affecting the campaign, which Pires called “good news,” though he noted its success depends on “a sustained ceasefire and the protection of humanitarian workers and families.”

Despite a recent increase in aid flows, a 260% rise in the number of pallets entering Gaza compared to before the ceasefire last month, UNICEF continues to face major restrictions.

“We have brought 1.6 million syringes, the vast majority still outside Gaza,” he said, adding that auto-disable syringes and solar-powered refrigerators remain blocked or awaiting clearance, as they are deemed dual-use by Israeli authorities.

“Yet, they are urgent,” he said.

Regarding UNICEF’s winterization response, he said it is underway with 38,000 winter clothing kits and 160,000 blankets already distributed. However, “essential items such as maternity kits and nearly one million bottles of infant formula remain withheld,” Pires said.

“When the guns go silent, humanitarian workers are able to turn the situation around rather quickly,” Pires said. “But still, there’s a lot of work to do. We can’t even begin to solve the problem that was caused by two years of war, violence, deprivation and lack of access in a couple of months.”

He stressed that “it’s a long road ahead, and we’re still finding it difficult to get some very essential supplies through,” calling for unrestricted humanitarian access to sustain progress in Gaza.

Israeli soldiers describe killings of civilians, aid seekers in Gaza “at wish of army officers”

Israeli soldiers have revealed that Palestinian civilians were killed inside Gaza at the wish of army officers amid a collapse of legal and military norms during Tel Aviv’s two-year brutal war on the enclave, Anadolu reports.

“If you want to shoot without restraint, you can,” Daniel, the commander of an Israeli tank unit, said in a documentary, set to be aired in the UK on ITV on Monday.

The Israeli army has killed more than 69,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 170,000 in Gaza and left the enclave uninhabitable since October 2023.

Israeli soldiers, some of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, said Palestinian civilians were used as human shields during the conflict, The Guardian reported.

Captain Yotam Vilk, an armored corps officer, said soldiers did not apply the long-standing army standard of firing only when a target had the “means, intent and ability” to cause harm.

“There’s no such thing as ‘means, intent and ability’ in Gaza,” he said. “It’s just suspicion – someone walking where it’s not allowed.”

Another soldier, identified only as Eli, said: “Life and death isn’t determined by procedures or opening fire regulations. It’s the conscience of the commander on the ground that decides.”

Eli recounted an officer ordering a tank to demolish a building where a man was just “hanging laundry,” resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

The documentary also presents detailed accounts of Israeli soldiers opening fire unprovoked on civilians running toward food handouts at militarized aid distribution points operated by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

A contractor identified only as Sam, who worked at GHF sites, said he saw Israeli soldiers shooting two unarmed men running to get aid.

“You could just see two soldiers run after them,” he recalled. “They drop onto their knees and they just take two shots, and you could just see … two heads snap backwards and just drop.”

Sam also described a tank destroying “a normal car … just four normal people sat inside it.”

According to UN figures, at least 944 Palestinian civilians have been killed by Israeli fire near such aid points.

The film also highlights the spread of extremist rhetoric inside Israel, including statements from rabbis and politicians depicting all Palestinians as legitimate targets after the Oct. 7 events.

“You hear that all the time, so you start to believe it,” Daniel said.

Rabbi Avraham Zarbiv, who served over 500 days in Gaza, defended large-scale home demolitions by the Israeli army in Gaza.

“Everything there is one big terrorist infrastructure…We changed the conduct of an entire army.”

In September, a UN commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, where a ceasefire came into force on Oct. 10 after two years of Israeli bombardment.

“I feel like they’ve destroyed all my pride in being an Israeli—in being an IDF (army) officer,” Daniel says in the program. “All that’s left is shame.”
