The BBC has long been accused of centering Israel and dismissing the humanity of Palestinians in its coverage of Gaza.

British journalist Owen Jones on Thursday celebrated a UK High Court judge’s ruling in his favor in a libel lawsuit that a BBC editor brought against him—and said that should the editor choose to move forward with his case despite the decision, he was looking forward “to defending my article in court.”

The High Court ruled that Jones was expressing an opinion when he wrote an article for Drop Site News in December 2024 titled “The BBC’s Civil War Over Gaza,” in which he spoke to BBC staffers about Middle East online editor Raffi Berg’s influence over the news outlet’s coverage of Israel and Palestine.

The court also said Jones had expressed his opinion and that of his sources based on concrete examples of Berg’s editorial role and journalism.

Jones’ article described staffers’ allegations that “internal complaints about how the BBC covers Gaza have been repeatedly brushed aside” as Berg “sets the tone” for the outlet’s online coverage of Israel’s onslaught in the exclave, where more than 75,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023 in what’s been called a genocide by top Holocaust scholars and human rights groups.

It noted that the BBC failed to report on Amnesty International’s finding that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza and displayed an on-screen chyron reading, “Israel rejects ‘fabricated’ claims of genocide.’”

“Journalists expressed concerns over bias in the shaping of the Middle East index of the BBC news website,” wrote Jones. “Several allege that Berg ‘micromanages’ this section, ensuring that it fails to uphold impartiality.”

The BBC has long been criticized for centering Israel and “dehumanizing” Palestinians, as more than 1,000 artists said in a letter last year when they condemned the network for refusing to air a documentary about the impact of Israel’s attacks on children in Gaza, on the grounds that it featured the child of the exclave’s deputy minister of agriculture—suggesting “that Palestinians holding administrative roles are inherently complicit in violence.”

The article also pointed to Berg’s own history of pro-Israel coverage, including a 2002 story “that presented young [Israel Defense Forces] soldiers as courageous defenders of their country while failing to mention the occupation and settlement of Palestinian land or the widespread allegations of crimes” documented by human rights groups and the US government.

Berg also presented Israeli settlers in the West Bank as “victims seeking ‘a better quality of life’ and did not mention the fact that the settlements have been repeatedly deemed illegal,” and wrote about the Mossad “in glowing terms” in a book he wrote with extensive cooperation from the Israeli intelligence agency.

He also posted a photo on social media showing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a copy of Berg’s book on his bookshelf, Jones reported.

Berg’s lawyer said last year that Jones’ reporting attacked Berg’s “professional reputation as a journalist and editor,” and led to death threats.

In order for his case against Jones to proceed, Berg would now need to prove in court that “Jones did not genuinely hold the opinion he expressed in his reporting, or demonstrate that the opinion is not one an honest person could hold on the basis of any fact that existed at the time of its publication,” Middle East Eye reported.

“I am proud to stand by my journalism,” said Jones Thursday.

A Palestinian journalist was killed in an Israeli strike in the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, despite a ceasefire agreement sponsored by US President Donald Trump, Anadolu reports.

Medical sources told Anadolu that photojournalist Mahmoud Wadi lost his life in an Israeli drone strike in central Khan Younis, an area that does not fall under the Israeli-controlled yellow zone.

There was no official statement from Gaza’s Government Media Office on the killing.

According to the latest figures published by the office in late October, Israel had killed 256 journalists in Gaza since Oct. 8, 2023. Wadi’s death brings the toll to 257.

Wadi’s father, Issam, described the Israeli strike as “an earthquake that struck the tent.”

“I never expected to lose Mahmoud, who was not just my son but a friend, as he grew up in a photography studio,” the grieved father told Anadolu.

“Mahmoud was photographing in a safe area (not under Israeli control according to the ceasefire agreement), but the Israelis respect no pledges or promises; their entire life is treachery and deceit,” he said.

Criminal act

The Palestinian father called his son’s killing “a criminal act carried out by the Israeli occupation.”

“They (Israelis) will continue until destroying the whole world,” he said.

A colleague of the slain journalist, Muhammad Abu Ubaid, a correspondent for Al-Alam TV in Gaza, said Wadi was “known for his humanitarian work and helping people.”

“He may not be known to everyone, but the poor and afflicted know him well, because he devoted his time to assisting them,” he told Anadolu.

“Wadi was a pure-hearted person. I sat with him last night, we talked a lot, and he told me about his plans to raise his young son, who is his whole world.”

“We had an appointment today at Nasser Hospital (in Khan Younis), but I found out he had been martyred,” Abu Ubaid said in tears.

“The world is silent and watching, and the (Israeli) occupation continues to kill us and kill journalists despite the agreement.”

International media institutions have repeatedly called on Israel to stop fatal attacks on Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip, but Tel Aviv has ignored these appeals.

Palestinians see the deliberate targeting of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip as an attempt to cover up its crimes in the territory.

The ceasefire deal took effect in Gaza on Oct. 10 under Trump’s Gaza plan, halting two years of Israeli attacks that have killed more than 70,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 171,000 others since October 2023.

Israel has repeatedly violated the agreement by opening fire on Palestinian civilians in areas it does not control under the deal, while the Palestinian group Hamas has announced its full commitment to the terms of the agreement and urged the US to pressure Israel to comply.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 356 Palestinians have been killed and more than 900 others injured in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire.

US ‘heading towards fascist dictatorship’ say critics after arrest of British journalist Sami Hamdi

The United States is “heading towards fascist dictatorship”, critics have warned, following the detention of British journalist Sami Hamdi by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Hamdi, a prominent political commentator and managing director of the London-based think tank The International Interest, was apprehended at San Francisco International Airport after addressing a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) gala in Sacramento.

ICE has confirmed that Hamdi is being held in custody pending removal, with a Homeland Security spokesperson citing revoked visa status. In a post on X, DHS official Tricia McLaughlin wrote: “Under President Trump, those who support terrorism and undermine American national security will not be allowed to work or visit this country.”

Critics, however, say Hamdi’s only “crime” was condemning Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

CAIR condemned his detention, describing it as a politically motivated abduction driven by pressure from far-right pro-Israel figures. In a statement, the group said:

“Abducting a prominent British Muslim journalist and political commentator on a speaking tour in the United States because he dared to criticise the Israeli government’s genocide is a blatant affront to free speech”, said CAIR.

“Our nation must stop abducting critics of the Israeli government at the behest of unhinged Israel First bigots. This is an Israel First policy, not an America First policy, and it must end.”

CAIR added that anti-Muslim provocateur Laura Loomer, who has previously espoused conspiracy theories and Islamophobic rhetoric, claimed credit for orchestrating Hamdi’s detention, posting that ICE responded to her demands.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has urged the UK government to intervene. “Press freedom cannot be selective,” it said. “The Government must defend British citizens and the right to speak truth to power.” It called for “urgent diplomatic action to secure British journalist Sami Hamdi’s release from US ICE detention.”

Hamdi’s father also issued a plea via X, writing: ” Anyone who truly wants to understand #Sami_Hamdi and how he thinks should start with these words” said Dr. Mohamed Elhachmi Hamdi sharing his son’s tweet from May calling out anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

Dr Yasir Qadhi, a prominent American Muslim scholar, warned that the arrest reflects an alarming trend: “Our country is heading towards a fascist dictatorship in which any speech that goes against the official narrative is going to be criminalised,” he said. Qadhi described Hamdi’s arrest as part of a broader campaign of “anti-Muslim bigotry”, cautioning that this “inhumane evil will be directed against multiple minorities, not just Muslims.”

Hamdi had been on a US speaking tour, with scheduled events in Florida following his appearance in California. He has appeared on UK broadcasters including Sky News and Channel 4 as a commentator on Middle East affairs.

The incident forms part of a broader pattern of repression against Palestinian advocacy and criticism of Israel in the US. Universities have revoked student group charters, political donors have blacklisted dissenting voices, and social media platforms have throttled pro-Palestinian content.

Rights groups have warned that these actions represent a coordinated campaign to silence opposition to Israeli war crimes and shield its leaders from accountability.

Israeli special forces arrested injured Palestinian journalist Muath Amarna, who lost one of his eyes in 2019 while covering events, on Wednesday evening. He was detained while passing along the road connecting the cities of Bethlehem and Hebron in the southern West Bank and taken to an unknown location.

In a separate incident, a Palestinian was injured by a rubber-coated metal bullet, as several others suffered from tear gas inhalation during clashes that followed an Israeli raid on Qusra town, south of Nablus in the northern West Bank.

Local sources said Israeli forces fired large numbers of rubber bullets and tear gas canisters at young men and residential homes. One young man was taken for medical treatment, while several residents suffered breathing difficulties.

According to the same sources, Israeli soldiers deliberately opened fire on homes in the southern part of the town and set up military checkpoints, disrupting the movement of residents.

The occupation forces and settlers have intensified their attacks and incursions into cities and areas of the West Bank since the launch of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation on October 7, 2023, coinciding with a widespread and devastating assault on the Gaza Strip that has resulted in the martyrdom and injury of approximately 219,000 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children.

Another Palestinian journalist was killed by Israeli army fire in Gaza, taking the death toll since October 2023 to 239, local authorities said on Tuesday, Anadolu reports.

Islam Al-Koumi, a journalist working with several media outlets, lost his life late Monday when Israeli fighter jets bombed his house in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, local media said.

Gaza’s Government Media Office said the new fatality brought the number of Palestinian journalists killed in the Israeli war in Gaza since October 2023 to 239.

The office condemned “Israel’s systematic assassination of Palestinian reporters in Gaza” and called on human rights and media institutions to “condemn these systematic crimes against Gaza journalists.”

Israel has killed more than 62,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
