… Keir Starmer could face the biggest parliamentary revolt since the Iraq war as MPs vote on welfare cuts the government’s own figures say will push 150,000 into poverty by 2030 tomorrow.

No 10 was accused of “total desperation” as furious Labour rebels vowed to vote down the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Bill.

Celebrities joined disabled activists as they staged protests outside Parliament and across the country today against the plans to create a “two-tier” welfare system.

Disabled People Against Cuts co-founder Linda Burnip told the Morning Star: “We are very much against the paltry concessions that have been made which actually don’t seem to going to protect anyone.

“It smacks to me of total desperation, they are just flopping around changing things from one day to another.

“We are obviously not being bought off by the concessions and protests will continue and we will make sure that any Labour MPs that vote in favour of this Bill don’t get back into the Parliament at the next election.”

Starmer imperils government with welfare cuts

Prime Minister Keir Starmer speaks during a reception for London Tech Week, at no 10 Downing Street, London, June 10, 2025

MPs will vote next week on welfare cuts aimed at disabled people, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Deputy Leader Angela Rayner pledged today.

Playing a game of chicken with the growing number of Labour rebels prepared to defy the government on the issue, Sir Keir pledged to press ahead with his savage cuts.

One Labour MP described it as a “charge of the political light brigade” by Blairite budgetary hardliners.

But Sir Keir told LBC radio that “there’ll be a vote on Tuesday, we’re going to make sure we reform the welfare system,” while Ms Rayner told MPs  simply: “We will go ahead on Tuesday.”

This does not mean that the debate will definitely proceed as planned, only that Downing Street has not yet made a final determination.

The number of Labour MPs prepared to back an amendment which would end all progress on the Bill has risen to over 120.

This would mean that Sir Keir could only prevail with Tory support.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is flirting with backing the government, but is demanding a pledge of no tax increases in the autumn Budget in return, something no government could offer while retaining any self-respect.

Sir Keir now faces several choices, all damaging to his political future.

Charities warn welfare cuts will push more people into homelessness

INFLICTING welfare cuts will push more people into homelessness, charities warned today.

Disability groups also accused the government, which aims to cut £5 billion a year from welfare spending by 2030, of “playing with fire by risking the lives of disabled people to meet arbitrary fiscal goals.”

Central to Labour’s welfare cuts is the tightening of eligibility criteria for personal independence payments (PIP) — a key disability benefit for working-age adults both in and out of work.

Those under 22 with long-term illnesses or disabilities will also no longer be able to claim the health top-up to universal credit under the plans.

Westminster’s own analysis shows the cuts risk pushing 250,000 people into poverty, including 50,000 children.

A letter co-ordinated by St Mungo’s, co-signed by 13 other homelessness organisations, is urging Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall to rethink the changes.

Cuts designed to get people back into work will actually “push people further away from the labour market, increase homelessness and put excessive pressure on statutory services,” the charities warn.

THE number of children living in poverty in Britain has reached a record high of almost 4.5 million, official figures revealed today.

Data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) showed 4.45 million children in households with relative low income after housing costs in the year to March 2024, up from 4.33m the previous year — the highest since records began in 2002-03.

A household is considered in relative poverty if its income falls below 60 per cent of the median after housing costs.

The official figure comes a day after government estimates showed that its welfare cuts will push 50,000 more children below the poverty line by 2030.

And a Resolution Foundation analysis said a weak economic outlook and benefit cuts will disproportionately impact lower-income families, reducing the average income for the poorest half by £500 on average over the next five years.

The think tank also said that Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s welfare cuts amount to £8.1 billion — far exceeding the £4.8bn stated by the government.

Reeves accused of balancing books on back of UK’s poorest

Labour is braced for a backlash from its MPs over welfare cuts called ‘appalling’ by a foodbank charity

Rachel Reeves was accused of balancing the books at the expense of the poor in her spring statement, as official figures showed three million households could lose £1,720 a year in benefits.

The chancellor confirmed welfare cuts of £4.8bn, but insisted the government’s priority was to restore stability to the public finances in the face of rising global borrowing costs.

Economists warned Reeves could be forced to come back with more tax rises in the autumn, with the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) saying that any tariffs imposed by Donald Trump may upend their forecasts.

Ruth Curtice, the director of the Resolution Foundation thinktank, said while Reeves was right to balance the books, she was “wrong to do so on the backs of low- to middle-income families, on whom two-thirds of the welfare cuts will fall”.

Helen Barnard, the director of policy at the food bank charity Trussell, said: “The insistence by the Treasury on driving through record cuts to disabled people’s social security to balance the books is both shocking and appalling. People at food banks are telling us they are terrified how they’ll survive.”
