“Put simply, those children who have survived so far are running out of time,” said one aid group. “We are pleading with the international community to urgently intervene.”

Israeli forces on Tuesday bombed a crowded residential building in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya, killing around 93 people—including at least 20 children—in the latest atrocity in a region that has been under heavy military siege for weeks.

Eyewitnesses described an appalling scene at the building decimated by the Israeli strike. One person who was helping to remove victims from the rubble told Reuters that there were “body parts hanging on the walls.” Another eyewitness said that “most of the victims are women and children.”

The Israeli strike on the residential building—which was reportedly sheltering roughly 200 displaced people—also wounded dozens, but hospitals in the region are overwhelmed and barely functional after relentless Israeli raids and attacks, leaving them unable to handle an influx of bombing victims.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital, told Al Jazeera that “more than 150 dead and wounded had arrived after the attack.”

“However, he warned that many of those injured may die because of a lack of resources,” the outlet reported. “Israeli forces detained dozens of medical staff at the hospital last week, leaving only three doctors.”

Israel’s attack in Beit Lahiya was one of a number of massacres committed in recent days in northern Gaza, where an estimated 100,000 Palestinians are trapped with virtually no access to food, medicine, and other essentials.

“There is nothing. You are talking about tens of days that they are not receiving any supplies,” said Mahmoud Alsaqqa, Oxfam’s food security and livelihood lead in Gaza. Alsaqqa said people are “starving to death” in northern Gaza as Israel impedes humanitarian aid shipments and moves to ban the United Nations’ Palestinian refugee agency.

Dylan Williams, vice president for government affairs at the Center for International Policy, noted Tuesday that “in the last day, Israel passed bills that would block most aid delivery in Gaza and the West Bank and bombed a building sheltering displaced civilians, reportedly killing mostly women and children.”

“Yet [U.S. President Joe] Biden keeps arming Israel counter to U.S. and international law,” Williams wrote on social media.

“Every possible step must be taken to secure a definitive cease-fire and to ensure adherence to international law.”

Internet blackouts in the region, meanwhile, have made it difficult for aid workers and reporters to relay news of northern Gaza’s dire conditions to the world.

“Communication between hospitals, health workers, and aid agencies is becoming sporadic, and ground fighting has made travel increasingly dangerous, making it hard to coordinate care and treatment and accurately collect casualty data,” The Guardian reported Tuesday. “The civil defense service suspended activities last Wednesday after crews were attacked by Israeli forces and tank shelling destroyed their last fire engine.”

Last week, Save the Children decried deadly Israeli attacks on 13 residential buildings in the Jabalia refugee camp and warned that “the threat of attacks and lack of fuel and supplies have left rescue services unable to operate” in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave.

“Attacks by Israeli forces across the Gaza Strip have killed scores of people, including many children and an 11-month-old baby,” said Jeremy Stoner, Save the Children’s regional director. “The attacks have targeted a school-turned-shelter in NuseiratKamal Adwan Hospital, and residential homes in Khan Younis—the very places where children are supposed to be safest, protected under international law.”

“Put simply, those children who have survived so far are running out of time. We are pleading with the international community to urgently intervene,” Stoner added. “Every possible step must be taken to secure a definitive cease-fire and to ensure adherence to international law. Governments must stop fueling the conflict with a supply of weapons and ammunition.”

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staffer Hasan Suboh was among those killed in the wave of Israeli attacks on residential homes in northern Gaza last week, the humanitarian group said in a statement Monday.

“Hasan’s tattered MSF vest, which he wore all the time, was found under the rubble,” the group said. “This vest symbolizes Hasan’s commitment to helping people in distress, but more globally it also symbolizes healthcare and humanitarian assistance.”

“To see it destroyed,” MSF added, “is representative of how in this war, Israel, the U.S. government, and the rest of Israel’s allies have disregarded the protection of healthcare workers, and ripped the rules of war to shreds. The claim that humanitarian workers are protected, that civilian lives are protected, has once again been exposed as a lie for all the world to see.”

The world prepares to vote against the US blockade on Cuba

The US blockade on Cuba has been widely condemned by the majority of the world, yet in recent years, instead of lifting it, successive US administrations have made it worse.

On October 29, the United Nations General Assembly began a series of debates to discuss the resolution on the long-standing economic blockade applied by the United States against the island of Cuba. Since the 1960s, the United States has systematically punished the Cuban people through a stringent blockade on its economy for having declared and built a political and economic model different from the one advocated and directed by the United States. The vote on the resolution will take place on Wednesday, October 30.

On more than 30 occasions, the United Nations Assembly has discussed the blockade against Cuba, which costs the island 5 billion dollars annually, according to some estimates. Every year the resolution is proposed and the whole world, through the vote of the absolute majority of the member countries of the United Nations General Assembly, has condemned the imperialist attitude of the United States towards Cuba.

This year, several regional platforms including, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), among others, announced their support for Cuba at the United Nations General Assembly in the face of the criminal blockade.

In this regard, the Russian delegate Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya said at the UN Assembly on Tuesday, “We continue to strongly advocate for the immediate lifting of the illegal embargo that has been imposed by the United States against Cuba for more than 62 years.”

The Mexican representative to the UN, Héctor Vasconcelos, stated in the session that he categorically rejects the blockade against Cuba and that it is in direct violation of international law. “It is time to open a new chapter and allow Cuba to participate fully in the global community without the restrictions imposed by this unjust and inhumane blockade,” Vasconcelos declared.

Almost all countries, except the United States, Israel, and one or two other governments allied with Washington’s policy, vote against the blockade and request the elimination of the sanctions against the socialist country. This, for many, reflects the anti-democratic attitude of the US government, which claims to represent the highest values of human rights and global cooperation, although, in this type of case, it scandalously ignores the demands of the vast majority of countries in the world.

For his part, the Cuban Secretary of State, Bruno Rodríguez, expressed his gratitude for the support given on October 29 by more than 30 delegations that expressed their desire for the United States to lift the blockade against Cuba: “We are grateful for the statements made by the 31 delegations that took the floor at the United Nations General Assembly, demanding the end of the US blockade against Cuba. Tomorrow [October 30] we will continue the debate and the vote against this genocidal policy will take place.”

The blockade tightens

Despite this enormous show of support for Cuba, the United States insists on the economic measure. It has even gone so far as to radicalize it, as happened during the administration of Donald Trump, who applied 243 new sanctions, including the removal of certain travel categories which allowed individual US citizens to visit the island, and included Cuba in the list of state sponsors of terrorism, which further hindered the development of the Cuban economy.

Instead of reversing the measures of his predecessor and returning to the opening policy started by Barack Obama, Biden maintained the more stringent measures against Cuba. In 2023, the US Department of Homeland Security added an additional coercive measure, stating that the ESTA visa waiver program, used largely by citizens of Europe, would be denied to anyone from eligible countries if they had traveled to Cuba anytime after July 2021. In essence, a direct punishment to anyone, even beyond US borders, who dares to visit the Caribbean nation.

A history of systematic political-economic punishment

The first time the US government applied an economic embargo on Cuba was in 1958, during the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Although the Cuban Revolution overthrew that military government, the US government punished the Caribbean Island again in 1960.

In the beginning, the restrictions did not include food and medicine, but from 1962, during the radicalization of the Cuban Revolution, the embargo became almost absolute. Cuba’s natural and historical trading partner, both because of its large territorial extension and its purchasing power, had been the United States.

In 1959, 73% of Cuban exports were destined for the United States, which shows the enormous impact that the decision had on the island, aimed at promoting the fall of the government led by Fidel Castro. Nevertheless, the USSR and Cuba reached several economic agreements that allowed the island to somehow withstand (never easily) the portentous US punishment.

However, after the dissolution of the USSR, the blockade began to acquire increasingly challenging characteristics. This is even more so if one takes into account that since 1992,  through the Cuban Democracy Act, the US government has not only prohibited US companies from trading with Cuba but also sanctioned any third party that does business with Cuba.

This makes any attempt to overcome the economic crisis induced by outside powers even more difficult. In addition, the US government in 2021 decided, without adequate technical justification, to include Cuba among the countries sponsoring terrorism.

It is foreseeable that Cuba will again feel the backing of international solidarity in the coming days, although the US government will ignore the request of the international community and continue to punish a small country that did not accept to be dominated and undertook a socialist revolution just a couple hundred miles south of the most powerful capitalist country in history.

Latin American leaders condemn assassination attempt against former Bolivian president Evo Morales

The car which the former president was traveling in was hit with over a dozen bullets in suspicious circumstances

On the morning of Sunday, October 27, former Bolivian president Evo Morales was targeted in an assassination attempt while driving between Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. A group of men without uniforms opened fire at two cars, injured one of the drivers, and nearly hit the former president.

The incident was met with international outcry, with political leaders from across Latin America and the Caribbean condemning the violent act against the former president. Honduran President Xiomara Castro, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed their solidarity with Morales and condemned the act of violence that he suffered on Sunday. Former heads of state Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina, who suffered an assassination attempt in 2022, and Rafael Correa of Ecuador, also condemned the violence faced by the Bolivian leader. Trade union leaders and social leaders from across the region also voiced their support to Morales, who himself came out of the trade union movement.

The sequence of events in the assassination attempt remains contested, with different and sometimes contradictory versions of events emerging. Notably, the violent act takes place in a context of high political tension in the country and within the left in Bolivia which has seen deep divisions form amid the internal struggle between political sectors represented by Morales and current President Luis Arce.

According to a statement released by the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS-IPSP), when Evo Morales was traveling to Lauca Ñ at around 6:30 am on Sunday to record his radio program, the cars he was traveling with were ambushed by two vehicles with heavily armed men. “The incident took place at the entrance of the military barracks of the Ninth Division of the Armed Forces. The armed men were armed with long weapons, dressed completely in black and shot at the vehicles in which Evo Morales was traveling,” MAS-IPSP declared in the statement.

They added, “According to witnesses of the events, the cars that transported the troops who perpetrated the attack against Evo Morales, subsequently entered the military barracks and then a helicopter that was waiting for them at the airstrip. We hold Luis Arce Catacora, Eduardo del Castillo, Minister of Government, and Edmundo Novillo, Minister of Defense, directly responsible for this attempt on the life of Evo Morales and the comrades who were with him.”

On Sunday, in the wake of the assassination attempt, Bolivian President Luis Arce stated: “The exercise of any violent practice in politics must be condemned and clarified. It is not with the search for dead people that problems are solved, nor with tendentious speculations. For this reason, in view of the denunciation by former President Evo Morales of an alleged attempt on his life, I have ordered an immediate and thorough investigation to clarify this fact.”

Morales has called on ALBA-TCP or CELAC to carry out an independent investigation.

Meanwhile the Minister of Government, Eduardo del Castillo, has attempted to present a different version of the events. According to statements made by del Castillo in a press conference, it was not an assassination attempt but the response of police to Evo’s vehicles not stopping at a police checkpoint. Further, del Castillo accused Morales and his team of firing on the troops and officers at the checkpoint and not stopping when told to. This version of the events has been met with a certain degree of skepticism.

While much uncertainty hangs over the situation, what is clear is that the incident has brought tensions in the country to an all-time high and the series of strikes and road blockades organized by parts of the peasant movement against the government have intensified. The high level of conflict between the two sectors which had initially been united to defeat the right in the 2020 elections which brought an end to the coup regime, has sparked deep concern amongst progressives in Bolivia and across the region. With elections approaching in August 2025, many hope that the divisions between these sectors can be overcome in order to achieve the unity necessary to defeat the right once again.

The giant warships sinking Britain’s budget

If chancellor Rachel Reeves is serious about public finances, she must stop the Royal Navy’s aircraft carriers causing a black hole in the military budget.

As Labour presents the public with large tax rises and cuts in services, Britain’s armed forces are wasting billions of pounds of public money on projects with no practical use in present or potential future conflicts.

It would be nothing short of a scandal if they are given more taxpayers’ money to spend.

Prime candidates for the chop, and an immediate target for the government’s promised Office for the Value of Money, should be the two aircraft carriers: HMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales – the largest ships ever built for the Royal Navy.

Independent analysts are starting to question the future of the carriers, something that was unthinkable not so long ago. There is speculation that at least one could be mothballed.

Shortly after he retired as chief of the defence staff, General (now Lord) David Richards described the ships as “unaffordable vulnerable metal cans”. They were “behemoths”, he told me.

Palestine campaigners blockade an Israeli-owned Elbit factory at Shenstone in Staffordshire, October 29, 2024

PALESTINE campaigners blockaded and closed an Israeli-owned British arms factory today.

UAV Engines at Shenstone in Staffordshire is one of five British factories owned by Israel’s biggest arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.

The factory makes engines for military drones used by Israel in its slaughter in Gaza.

Weekly protests are mounted outside the factory by local Palestine campaigners supported by Greater Manchester Friends of Palestine (GMFP) activists.

John Nicholson of GMFP told the Morning Star: “There are 200 people outside Elbit’s Shenstone factory accompanied, ridiculously, by dozens of police officers and police cars.
