THE British government has changed its rhetoric on the Gaza genocide. The more it does so, the more its actual policy stands exposed as politically and morally bankrupt.
Ministers have deprecated Israel’s renewed offensive in Gaza, and express mounting concern at the criminal slaughter of aid workers in particular, as well as the unbridled terror and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. They urge an immediate restoration of the ceasefire.
In this it reflects the views of many in all parties, and most in all except perhaps the Tories. Israel’s outspoken defenders are a breed diminishing by the day in the Commons.
And yet this shift has not been accompanied by the slightest modification in policy.

“It was never about ‘legal’ immigration, but always about upholding white supremacy,” said one human rights lawyer.
In yet another Trump administration attack on migrants, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced that nearly 1 million migrants who entered the country legally using a Customs and Border Protection mobile application must leave “immediately” or face consequences including potential criminal prosecution.
DHS notified migrants who were granted temporary parole protection after entering the country using the CBP One app—which was launched by the Biden administration in 2020 and upgraded in 2023—that “it is time for you to leave the United States.”
The department “mis now exercising its discretion to terminate your parole,” the agency said in an email to affected—and more than 200,000 unaffected—migrants. “Unless it expires sooner, your parole will terminate seven days from the date of this notice.”
“If you do not deport from the United States immediately you will be subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal,” the notice continues. “You will be subject to potential criminal prosecution, civil fines, and penalties, and any other lawful options available to the federal government.”

“DHS encourages you to leave immediately on your own,” the notice stresses, providing a link to a new app—called CBP Home—containing “a self-deportation reporting feature for aliens illegally in the country.”
“Do not attempt to remain in the United States. The federal government will find you,” DHS ominously added.
Approximately 985,000 migrants used the problem-plagued CBP One app to schedule appointments with U.S. immigration officials when arriving at ports of entry and were generally permitted to remain in the country for two years with work authorization.
However, DHS claimed Monday that “the Biden administration abused the parole authority to allow millions of illegal aliens into the U.S. which further fueled the worst border crisis in U.S. history.”
“Canceling these paroles is a promise kept to the American people to secure our borders and protect national security,” the agency added.
President Donald Trumpended new CBP One entries on January 20, his first day in office, via executive order, a move that left thousands of vulnerable migrants stranded in Mexico after their immigration appointments were canceled.
Monday’s announcement does not affect people who entered the U.S. under Operation Allies Welcome for Afghans or the Uniting for Ukraine program—although more than 200,000 Ukrainian beneficiaries last week received a separate jarring email mistakenly informing them that their status had been revoked.
The new policy also “should not immediately affect migrants who entered via CBP One and applied for asylum and have pending cases in immigration court,” according to CBS News immigration and politics reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez, who noted that “the government generally has to wait for those cases to be adjudicated or terminated before moving to deport.”
More than 500,000 Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan migrants who entered the country via the CBP One app with U.S.-based financial sponsors are also bracing for the loss of their protected status on April 24. Additionally, the Trump administration announced the revocation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for over 1 million Haitian and Venezuelan migrants.
However, on March 31 a federal judge in San Francisco blocked the administration’s effort to expel 350,000 Venezuelan TPS recipients, finding that the deportations were “motivated by unconstitutional animus” and would “inflict irreparable harm” upon affected migrants.
Critics have accused the Trump administration and its supporters of reveling in the cruelty inherent in forcibly removing migrants.

Proponents, meanwhile, say Trump is keeping his promise to carry out the largest mass deportation campaign in U.S. history—even as statistics show that the Biden administration deported people at a faster rate last year.
Migrants and other immigrants, including those who legally sought asylum in the United States—at least one of whom was wrongfully expelled—are being sent by the Trump administration to destinations including a camp in the Panamanian jungle and an ultra-high security prison in El Salvador.
Advocacy groups argue that such deportations are unlawful and violate deportees’ rights. Human Rights Watch has documented cases of “torture, ill-treatment, incommunicado detention, severe violations of due process, and inhumane conditions, such as lack of access to adequate healthcare and food” in Salvadoran prisons.
Responding to Monday’s DHS announcement, U.S. human rights attorney Qasim Rashid noted on social media that “985K migrants entered [the] USA through legal means during the previous administration.”
“Trump just unilaterally revoked their legal status,” Rashid added. “It was never about ‘legal’ immigration, but always about upholding white supremacy. This man is a fascist.”
Allen Orr Jr., a Washington, D.C.-based immigration lawyer, lamented Tuesday that “migrants who followed the rules and entered legally through CBP One are now being punished.”
“Not because they broke the law, but because of who granted them the benefit,” he added. “This isn’t about security; it’s about revenge.”

DOSSIER: The lawyers hand in the evidence to New Scotland Yard
POLICE are assessing evidence that 10 British nationals committed war crimes in Gaza including sniping down children and aid workers.
Lawyers handed evidence accusing the group of the murder and torture of civilians while on active service with the Israeli military to the Metropolitan Police’s war crimes unit yesterday.
Speaking outside New Scotland Yard, they said their 240-page dossier is “just the tip of the iceberg,” with reports of more than 100 Britons having served with Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) since October 2023.
Nearly 100 legal and human rights experts have signed a letter urging the War Crimes Team to investigate the dossier by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) and the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC).
PILC legal director and founder Paul Heron said that the report is based on six months of extensive evidence-gathering using open-source evidence and witness testimony.
It shows 10 Britons “committed war crimes and crimes against humanity while serving for the Israeli military on active service in Gaza,” he said.
SINCE the Netanyahu government engineered the collapse of the ceasefire, Israel’s crimes in Gaza have escalated horrifically, killing 400 people in one night and more than 100 children a day on average since last month.
Israel has been exposed executing paramedics and rescue workers and hiding their bodies and vehicles and has killed more journalists during the genocide than died during the US civil war, both world wars, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Russia combined.

Donald Trump is repeating the same mistakes of short-lived former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss. It’s not a few uber-rich individuals that maintain economic health, concentrating wealth is unhealthy. The rich wouldn’t be rich if they were willing to spend their money. It is the poor that are forced to spend to survive, they have no choice. Making the poor poorer to make a tiny minority richer is counter-productive as markets globally are showing.
Additionally, Trump is a sullen, arrogant bigot unwilling to recognise the overwhelming urgency of climate action. Even marine mammals recognise this.

DEMONSTRATIONS across the United States over the weekend give the lie to claims that all is lost in the struggle for people’s rights and social justice against the conservative right and its far-right allies.
Of course, there are always the defeatists — notably the “centre-left” intellectuals — who insist that the working classes on both sides of the Atlantic are too stupid, lazy, selfish and racist to resist injustice.
In the words of Private Frazer: “We’re all doomed!” Fascism is inevitable.
Meanwhile, millions of protesters of all colours, creeds and political affiliations, from the centre-right to the real left, from Los Angeles to Washington DC, marched in defence of jobs, women’s rights, the US constitution, the young, the elderly, the sick, black communities, the world’s poor and the Palestinians against the Trumpian onslaught.
They face a deeply reactionary Republican administration backed by a sizeable section of ruthless monopoly capital and a powerful state apparatus. The US working class, the labour and progressive movements and the people will need all the unity they can muster to block the advance of the resurgent right and its proto-fascist elements.
But as the worldwide pushback grows against Donald Trump’s global trade war, cracks will open up within the ruling Republicans, the monopoly capitalist class and even within and between the agencies of the state. Provided the insurgents put not their trust in Democratic Party politicians on the big-business payroll, they can generate their own vision, strategies and leadership to turn back the Maga maniacs.
In Britain, too, the “centre left” must not be allowed to divert or demoralise the emerging opposition to Keir Starmer’s treacherous regime and its pro-City, pro-Nato policies.
In many local communities, people are beginning to mobilise to defend their public services, their social facilities and their rights. Never have such policies as a wealth tax, public-sector housebuilding and public ownership of energy and public transport been so popular. The Alternative Economic Strategy is making a welcome comeback.
Protesters march every week against the British government’s sickening silence about — and complicity in — the Israeli genocide. Britain’s armed forces can blast the Houthis and defend Israel against incoming rockets, can bomb and invade Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Yemen — yet not a finger can be lifted to protect defenceless Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Public cynicism about the West’s real motives for pouring yet more weapons into the Ukraine war cauldron instead of genuinely seeking the end to a conflict that did not begin with Russia’s brutal incursion three years ago.
In Britain, we can build a people’s mass movement around these burning issues and, in the process, expose the anti-working-class politics of Reform UK, whose four top officers made their millions in banking, property development or the City.
Again, though, we need unity to be built on solid foundations.
These cannot include demands for Britain to align itself with the EU in a trade war against the US and even China. Nor should there be illusions that deep-seated problems which festered during decades of EU membership can somehow be more readily resolved by rejoining the big-business club or its capital and labour markets.
Nato rearmament must be opposed. The US-led cold war anti-socialist alliance has now outlived the Warsaw Pact by more than 30 years.
Clasping these two serpents to its bosom would spell suicide for any people’s movement that stands for public services, social justice, peace and solidarity.
