The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz has been “closed to all vessels,” warning ships against approaching the strategic waterway, Anadolu reports.

According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, the IRGC Navy said the move came in response to what it described as the “crimes of the Zionist regime” in Lebanon and the US violation of its commitments to establish a ceasefire.

“Vessels should not approach the strait; otherwise, their security will be at risk,” it added.

Italy will reopen its embassy in Tehran on Friday, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Wednesday, according to the ANSA news agency.

“Our embassy in Tehran will reopen on Friday,” Tajani said during Question Time in parliament.

The announcement comes after Italy temporarily closed its diplomatic mission in the Iranian capital earlier this year amid regional tensions.

Tajani said the Italian ambassador, along with diplomats and staff from the Foreign Ministry, would return to Tehran as part of the reopening process.

He described recent understandings between the US and Iran as an “encouraging development” and said there was a “glimmer of peace” in the Middle East that should not be wasted.

The foreign minister also said he would speak later with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and that Italy was ready to support efforts to turn the US-Iran understanding into lasting peace.

Tajani stressed the importance of restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, saying it was vital for the Italian economy.

Washington and Tehran reached a temporary truce in April through Pakistani mediation before announcing a framework agreement Monday to end the war. The accord is expected to be formally signed Friday in Switzerland.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran has sovereign rights over the Strait of Hormuz as a coastal state overlooking the strategic waterway.

Ghalibaf said the Strait of Hormuz “will not return to what it was before”, but stressed that Iran does not intend to act in violation of international law.

He added that Iran has sovereign rights in the strait and that it is natural for the country to charge fees for services provided to vessels passing through it, clarifying that these are service fees rather than tolls.

Ghalibaf also said that Article 13 of the memorandum of understanding stipulates that commitments will be implemented on a “step-for-step” basis.

He stated that the memorandum includes provisions related to reconstruction and development, adding that the United States does not acknowledge itself as the aggressor in order to avoid paying compensation.

According to Ghalibaf, the memorandum also provides for the establishment of a $300 billion investment fund.

He further said there are no legal barriers under Iranian law preventing American companies from operating or investing in Iran.

Ghalibaf added that the memorandum formally recognises Iran’s right to receive payments for services provided to ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the deal announced with Iran this week is a “memorandum of understanding” and remains subject to change, Anadolu reports.

“If I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them,” Trump told reporters during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

He warned that if Iran’s leaders “don’t behave,” the US will resume “dropping bombs” on their territory.

Washington and Tehran reached a temporary truce this April through Pakistani mediation before announcing a framework agreement this Monday to end the conflict. The accord is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.

Nuclear goals, funding denied

Trump said the core objective of the deal is preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear weaponry.

“It’s a great deal for a lot of reasons, but number one, by far, 99.9% is they will never have a nuclear weapon,” he said, characterizing the pact as “very strong.”

The US president also firmly rejected reports of a $300 billion development fund accessible to Iran involving American taxpayers, calling it a “false story.”

“We’re not investing. We’re not putting up 10 cents,” Trump said, adding that others may choose to invest. “I would say they won’t be doing it for a while, until they find out (about) the behavior (by Iran),” he added.

Economic relief, maritime security

On the global economic impact of the war, Trump said oil prices have “come tumbling down” as markets react to the de-escalation.

The US president added that the Strait of Hormuz is “already partially opened” and that he expects the vital waterway to be fully operational within the next two days.

He argued that without a deal, the world would have faced a “depression” because the strait would have remained closed due to the risk of rockets and mines.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the Strait of Hormuz would be fully reopened by Friday and remain open to shipping toll-free on a permanent basis, Anadolu reports.

Speaking to reporters at a meeting with the United Arab Emirates’ President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in France, Trump said: “We’re going to have it (Strait of Hormuz) fully open by Friday.”

“The ships are starting to move nicely, oil is starting to go, and the prices are coming down rapidly. Stock market is going up rapidly, a lot of good things are happening, and most importantly, Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.

He said the waterway “is going to be open toll-free, and it’s toll-free beyond the 60 days,” adding: “When it opens permanently, it’ll be toll-free.”

The US president vowed to share with media the peace deal document reached with Iran “in a couple of days.”

“I’ll not only release it, I’ll probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word, so that the press covers it accurately, because it’s a very important document,” he said.

Trump also said he intends to send the Iran deal to Congress for review, saying: “I like the idea … Send it to Congress, please.”

He said that if the deal is not approved, “let’s let them (Iran side) have a nuclear weapon,” adding that the Democrats will “go crazy.”

The US president also said removing Iran’s enriched uranium following US strikes on the country would be a “very tough excavation,” adding that only US and “probably China” have the capability to do it.
