Declassified and the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) launch a major campaign to demand the end of impunity for British nationals who fought for Israel in Gaza.

Earlier this year, Declassified revealed that over 2,000 Britons served for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) since October 2023.

This information would never have come to light using sources in Britain.

The UK government does not collect data on British nationals serving in the IDF, and soldiers returning from Israel have not been questioned about their activities in the region.

Instead, the information came from a Freedom of Information request issued to the IDF by a lawyer in Israel.

The UK government’s failure to collect data on the movements of potential war criminals or properly investigate their activities raises serious concerns.

Individuals who have returned from committing war crimes in Gaza may now be living alongside us and working in public institutions such as hospitals, the police, and schools.

Nobody wants to live next to a war criminal – not least members of the Palestinian community in the UK who have family or friends who have been subjected to war crimes.

Major campaign

In the interests of transparency, public safety, and justice, Declassified and the ICJP are launching a major campaign to demand that the UK government:

Track the movements of Brits who have served in the IDF
Subject them to secondary screening where necessary at ports of entry
Support robust war crimes investigations in line with domestic and international law

In July, Declassified issued a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Cabinet Office regarding Starmer’s two calls with Trump, specifically asking for “all references to Palestine Action”.

In response, the Cabinet Office said it could “neither confirm nor deny if the specific information requested [regarding Palestine Action] is held”, relying on an international relations exemption in the FOI Act.

This exemption allows the government to withhold “confidential information obtained from” a foreign state.

In September, the Cabinet Office upheld its initial decision following a request for an internal review.

The department said: “The information sought relates to sensitive diplomatic communications between the UK and US at the very highest level in the form of direct exchanges between the Prime Minister and President”.

Additional reporting adds weight to the suspicion that the US president may have been lobbying or seeking to influence the UK government with regards to law enforcement of Palestine Action.

On 14 September, The Telegraph reported that: “After Trump Turnberry was vandalised with red paint by pro-Gaza protesters in March, the Prime Minister was asked for updates on those arrested from Police Scotland and briefed Trump personally on developments”.

UK defence chiefs made 12 trips to Israel during Gaza war

Arms control expert calls the scale of visits “a moral failing of massive proportions”.

Britain’s most senior military personnel made at least a dozen official visits to Israel during the Gaza war, newly published government data reveals.

The trips, largely unpublicised, almost entirely took place as Israeli forces barraged Gaza and international calls for an arms embargo intensified.

The scale of these visits is revealed in recent Ministry of Defence (MoD) expense records and senior staff travel disclosures covering November 2023 to March 2025.

They detail the costs of visits by officers ranked two-star and above and senior MoD civil servants, including Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton and General Sir James Hockenhull.

Together, the trips cost more than £18,000, excluding several Royal Air Force (RAF) flights recorded as “nil return.”

Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), the London-based research charity which analysed the material, found that Britain’s defence establishment maintained regular contact with Israel’s armed forces throughout the conflict.

The findings expand on Declassified’s earlier reporting, which identified five such visits as well as a meeting by Major General Zac Stenning.

These additional records show that senior British officers continued to travel to Israel well into 2025, meeting their counterparts even as accusations of war crimes mounted.

Declassified barred from London arms fair as Israeli weapons dealers arrive

Press freedom groups condemn organiser’s last minute decision to deny Declassified entry.

A major arms fair has been criticised by press freedom groups for refusing to let Declassified enter the event, which is being held for the first time since Labour took power.

The biennial Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) trade show is hosting over 50 Israeli companies this week at London’s sprawling ExCel Centre, despite cancelling plans for an Israeli government pavilion.

Exhibitors include Rafael, a missile manufacturer wholly owned by the Israeli state, and private weapons firm Elbit, which supplies 85% of drones used in Gaza.

It marks the first time Declassified has been denied media accreditation, having attended the last two DSEI events.

Those took place under Conservative governments in 2023 and 2021, when we questioned defence ministers about arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Reporters Without Borders said the decision to block Declassified this year was “worrying”, “anti-democratic” and “suggests there is something to hide.”

When Declassified was allowed to enter DSEI in 2021, event spokesman General Roddy Porter claimed: “We’ve got nothing to hide here. This is a legitimate government transactional business.”

DSEI is organised by the company Clarion Events but relies on close cooperation from the UK’s Ministry of Defence, Foreign Office and trade department.
