EU keeps sanctions on Israel ‘on the table’ despite Gaza ceasefire

The European Union has not ruled out imposing sanctions on Israel, despite the recent ceasefire in Gaza, EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas said on Monday.

Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Kallas emphasised that while the ceasefire had shifted the political context, the bloc would maintain pressure on Israel to ensure the truce is upheld and humanitarian conditions improve. “The ceasefire has changed the context—that is very clear to everyone,” Kallas said. “However, unless we see real and sustainable change on the ground, including more aid reaching Gaza, the threat of sanctions will remain.”

Prior to the ceasefire deal brokered by US President Donald Trump, Brussels had discussed potential punitive measures against Israel, including the blacklisting of senior Israeli officials and restrictions on trade relations. “We are not taking these measures now, but we are not taking them off the table either, because the situation is fragile,” Kallas added.

EU officials have repeatedly urged Israel to facilitate unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza and warned that any backsliding on ceasefire commitments could reignite instability across the region.

Westminster attack on press freedom condemned by journalists and MPs

Campaign comes after officials blocked Declassified from holding a press pass, citing our Gaza ‘standpoint’.

More than 100 politicians, journalists and campaigners have condemned a “flagrant and partisan attempt to suppress investigative journalism” by parliament.

It comes after officials blocked Declassified from holding a press pass, citing the “particular standpoint” of our investigations.

They even flagged a recent article about the risk of pro-Israel bias in Westminster.

Now, an open letter calls on authorities to urgently review this decision and issue Declassified with a press pass.

The open letter has also been signed by more than 5,800 Declassified readers and supporters, and was hand-delivered to Westminster officials this afternoon.

Parliament has issued passes to almost 500 journalists, providing access to the corridors of power in Westminster. They include many from right-wing outlets like Guido Fawkes and GB News.

When Declassified’s application for a pass was first rejected, officials claimed it was due to capacity “limitations within the Parliamentary estate”.

But documents released under the Freedom of Information Act revealed there was no limit to the number of press passes that can be issued – and capacity was not even discussed as a consideration.

Instead, they cited the “standpoint” of our foreign policy investigations – and bizarrely even claimed that foreign policy does not count as “politics”.

A military agreement Britain and Israel signed in 2020 has not been modified despite Israel’s attacks on Gaza, the Ministry of Defence admits.

In December 2020, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted that it had signed a military agreement with the UK.

It said British and Israeli military chiefs had agreed to “formalise and enhance the defence partnership and support the growing Israel-UK partnership.”

In Britain, the government gave the new agreement no publicity. Months passed in silence, with no press release or mention by the Ministry of Defence, together with no noticeable interest from the national media.

The silence was broken in May 2021 when Kenny MacAskill MP questioned the government in parliament, requesting it to publish the accord.

But Conservative defence minister James Heappey said the agreement was “being kept at a higher security classification and therefore it will not be made public”.

Heappey said the accord “strengthens the defence relationship between Britain and Israel” and was “an important piece of defence diplomacy”.

Now, a response by the MoD to a freedom of information request states that “no amendments or modifications to this agreement exist”, confirming it is still active.

The admission is significant, showing that UK ministers have been content to keep a military accord alive with a state engaged in genocide.

Katie Lam said move would make UK ‘culturally coherent’ and that a large number of people ‘need to go home’

A Conservative MP tipped as a future party leader has been condemned for saying large numbers of legally settled families must be deported, in order to ensure the UK is mostly “culturally coherent”.

The Tory leader, Kemi Badenoch, has been urged to condemn the comments by Katie Lam, a Home Office shadow minister and a whip for the party. Lam was previously a special adviser to Boris Johnson and is often described as a rising star of the new intake.

Lam told the Sunday Times she believed large numbers of people with legal status in the UK would need to have their right to stay revoked and should “go home”.

She said: “There are also a large number of people in this country who came here legally, but in effect shouldn’t have been able to do so. It’s not the fault of the individuals who came here, they just shouldn’t have been able to do so.

“They will also need to go home. What that will leave is a mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people.”

In a letter to Badenoch, the Lib Dem leader, Ed Davey, called it “deeply concerning and unpatriotic. People who have come to the United Kingdom legally, played by the rules and made it their home do not need to ‘go home’. This is their home.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu boasted Monday that his army struck the Gaza Strip on Sunday with 153 tons of bombs, in what amounts to an admission of violating a ceasefire agreement, Anadolu reports.

Speaking at the opening of the Knesset’s winter session, Netanyahu faced repeated interruptions from opposition lawmakers protesting his government’s policies and its deliberate prolonging of the Israeli war in Gaza.

“During the ceasefire, two soldiers fell… We struck them with 153 tons of bombs and attacked dozens of targets across the Gaza Strip,” he said.

The Gaza government media office reported 80 Israeli ceasefire violations since the US-sponsored agreement came into effect on Oct. 10, resulting in 97 Palestinians killed, including 44 on Sunday alone, and 230 others injured.

Tel Aviv alleged that Hamas had attacked its forces in the southern city of Rafah. The Palestinian group has denied any involvement and reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire agreement.

The ceasefire deal was announced on Oct. 10, based on a phased plan presented by US President Donald Trump. Phase one included the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Since October 2023, the Israeli genocidal war has killed over 68,200 people and injured more than 170,200, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
