NHS failing to cut waiting times as promised in recovery plan, report warns

Public accounts committee finds Labour’s progress ‘appears to have stalled’ despite billions of pounds in investment

The NHS has failed to cut waiting times as promised in its recovery plan despite billions of pounds in investment, the public accounts committee (PAC) has warned.

The influential parliamentary committee’s verdict raises serious doubts over whether Labour can fulfil its key pledge to voters to “fix the NHS” by ensuring that patients can once again get hospital care within 18 weeks by 2029.

In a scathing report, the cross-party PAC warns that improvements in providing faster tests and treatment have “stalled”. And it criticises Keir Starmer and the health secretary, Wes Streeting, for ordering a costly, unplanned reorganisation of the NHS in England. It said this could damage care and was reminiscent of the shambles surrounding the HS2 rail project.

Far more patients than promised still have to wait more than 18 weeks for non-urgent hospital care – sometimes for more than a year – and more than six weeks for an X-ray or scan, it found. “Progress in reducing waiting times appears to have stalled, with the total elective care waiting list standing at 7.4m clinical pathways,” the report says – about 220,000 fewer than when Labour took power in July 2024.

The PAC’s conclusions will alarm ministers, who are keenly aware that the public’s top priority is to see NHS waiting times fall, and that Reform UK has recently supplanted Labour as the party that voters see as having the best policies on healthcare.

Its gloomy verdict contrasts sharply with the upbeat picture of progress in the NHS during Labour’s 16 months in power that Streeting painted last week.

Writing for HuffPost UK, the Greens leader says only his party will stand up to the powerful and defend the 99%.

Last week, when Home Office Minister Mike Tapp fired off his crass “deport, deport, deport” tweet, he wasn’t trying to fix a broken system, he was talking directly to voters Labour have lost to Reform.

He thought he was being tough. And yes, I’m sure Labour strategists smirked. But millions of people across this country weren’t amused. They were horrified. Because this is not leadership. It is cruelty. Cheap, dangerous, divisive cruelty aimed at the people with the least power.

And when I called it out, Tapp threw more playground insults around and called me a communist. That’s McCarthyism. That bleak, paranoid era when smearing people replaced making arguments. That’s where Labour is now.

And of course, all of this bile comes as Westminster prepares for next week’s Budget. Another opportunity for Labour, Reform, and the Conservatives to talk about how they are standing up for ordinary people all while “asking” them to pay more and allowing the very wealthiest to get richer and richer. It’s grotesque.

I obviously disagree with them, but I get why so many people say they’re considering Reform. They can see a truth: the political establishment, of which Reform is part, has been ripping them off for years. Bills through the roof. Wages that don’t stretch. Young people locked out of housing. And into this frustration steps the far right, pointing the finger at migrants and asylum seekers. And instead of confronting that lie head-on, Labour has chosen to echo it.

This week, the Labour government decided, deliberately, to outbid Reform on cruelty. This is morally repugnant and complete political cowardice.

A huge jump in members has landed the party with a multi-million pound windfall.

The Green Party has raked in £4 million in donations since Zack Polanski became leader, it has emerged.

The huge windfall – which is almost as much as the party usually raises in a year – comes as the Greens enjoy a huge surge in popularity.

A poll earlier this month put the party ahead of Labour for the first time

Membership numbers have risen to more than 150,000, with 78,000 signing up last month alone – leading to the huge boost in the party’s coffers.

Left-winger Polanski was only elected the Green Party leader in September, but since then its rise has been meteoric.

He said last week that the Greens are “now the real opposition in British politics”.

“The only party able to hold this failing Labour government to account while also taking the fight to Reform,” he said. “This isn’t a protest vote; it’s a movement. And we’re only just getting started.”

The boost to the party’s war chest will allow them to spend far more money campaigning ahead of next May’s elections in Scotland, Wales and England.

Richard Wilson, the Greens’ head of finance, told The Times that the sudden influx of cash will allow the party to spend money on things it could not afford previously.

Israeli army detains 100 Palestinians in West Bank raid

The Israeli army detained about 100 Palestinians in the town of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank, after sealing all of the town’s entrances early Wednesday, Anadolu reports.

The operation came hours after an Israeli settler was killed and three others were wounded, one critically, in a ramming and stabbing attack at the Gush Etzion junction in the southern West Bank. The attack was carried out by two Palestinians, one of them from Beit Ummar, who were shot dead by Israeli forces.

On Tuesday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said the Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority — the official liaison with Israel — notified it that Imran al-Atrash from Hebron and Walid Mohammed Sabarneh from Beit Ummar were killed by Israeli fire near Bethlehem in the southern West Bank.

Israeli forces stormed Beit Ummar early Wednesday and raided dozens of homes, including the Sabarneh family’s house, damaging its contents, witnesses told Anadolu.

They said the army launched a broad arrest campaign in the town, detaining about 100 people.

According to the witnesses, the army turned the municipal stadium into a makeshift holding and interrogation site.

Videos circulating online showed Israeli soldiers escorting bound Palestinians inside the town.

Residents said the army sealed all entrances to Beit Ummar with dirt mounds and iron gates, restricting movement in and out of the area.

The Israeli army has escalated its attacks in the West Bank since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.

More than 1,076 Palestinians have since been killed, and 10,700 others injured in attacks by the army and illegal settlers in the occupied territory. More than 20,500 people have also been arrested.

In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
