COP30: Ode to the Amazon

The Rio Guajará (Guajará River), part of the vast Amazon River delta

As COP30 kicks off in Belém, Brazil, we look at the significance of hosting this year’s UN climate conference in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

The world’s largest rainforest – home to more species of plants and animals than anywhere else on Earth – is opening its doors, giving humanity a chance to do right by the planet that hosts it. As we walk through the rainforest, we are humbled, as it reminds us that it is the heartbeat and the lungs of our planet.

Here in Belém, “the gateway to the Amazon”, life moves in time with nature. The air is thick with humidity, sudden tropical showers fall, followed by the hum of insects and the call of birds. Vultures circle above, herons perch on the riverbanks, and capybaras wander through the green patches that break the city’s skyline. Coconut water stalls line the streets, purple açaí leaves a natural liner around the lips of the men, women and children who eat it – with their fish or in their milkshakes. Even amongst the hustle and bustle, as the streets fill up, Belém is very clearly inseparable from the forest that cradles it.

Representing the Holy See just prior to the opening of COP30, at the leaders’ summit on 7 November, Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, reminded delegates of Pope Leo XIV’s message: “If you want to cultivate peace, care for creation.” Cardinal Parolin reminded world leaders that the climate crisis is not only a question of technology or finance, but of justice and solidarity – pointing out that ‘those in the most vulnerable situations are the first to suffer,’ and he called for COP30 to become ‘a sign of hope’ in a world already ‘in flames’ from both environmental and human conflict.

His words echoed those of Pope Francis in Laudato si’, who wrote that “we have no such right” to destroy creation, reminding us that humanity’s vocation is not to dominate the earth but to till and keep it – to care for the world and for every creature that shares it with us.

The message is clear: caring for the planet is inseparable from caring for one another.

As delegates gather in Belém over the next two weeks, the world will watch for commitments that can bring together words and action, pray for funding that reaches the communities protecting the world’s organs, and hope for agreements that honour both people and planet.

THE United Nations climate negotiations got under way today in the Brazilian city of Belem, known as the gateway to the Amazon River.

The negotiations follow the leaders’ summit which was held last Friday where leaders pushed for greater urgency and co-operation in the fight to curb global warming by drastically reducing the carbon pollution that causes it.

Andre Correa do Lago, president of this year’s Cop30, emphasised that negotiators engage in “mutirao,” a Brazilian word derived from an indigenous word that refers to a group uniting to work on a shared task.

“Either we decide to change by choice, together, or we will be imposed change by tragedy,” do Lago wrote in his letter to negotiators Sunday. “We can change. But we must do it together.”

Complicating the calls for togetherness is the United States. The Trump administration did not send high-level negotiators to the talks and is withdrawing for the second time from the 10-year-old Paris Agreement.

Staff arrive at BBC Broadcasting House in London after BBC Director-General Tim Davie resigned, November 10, 2025

THE Tory and Tory-government-appointed director general of the BBC, has resigned. Sir Tim Davie may well be pleased to be knocked off his perch given the miserable time he has had dealing with the problems that beset our principal state-affiliated media organisation.

The proximate cause is a leaked internal memo which presented a Panorama documentary as making it seem as if Donald Trump directly called for the Maga assault on the US capitol [capital] that marked the end of his first term as president.

BBC bosses have the unenviable task of maintaining the elaborate fiction that the organisation is a paragon of journalistic integrity and unwavering objectivity while policing successive waves of criticism. This comes from both a left, which for reasons of state is necessarily marginalised in the coverage of political affairs, and an insurgent right that, despite its impeccable patrician leadership, has chosen to present itself as the representative of a disgruntled citizenry.

Another pressure comes from Israel’s hit squad in public life, who keep the BBC under pressure to present the genocidal apartheid state as an ordinary democracy fighting a “normal” war through relentless accusations of anti-semitic bias.

In this particular moment the BBC has become the the target of our government circles which, in a manner entirely consistent with their supine relationship to the United States, is acting in conformity with Trump’s prejudices and prerogatives as leader of the “free world.”

It is indeed true that the Panorama clip in question elided two parts of Trump’s speech into a single framing of the Capitol riot he enabled. That it spoke to a wider truth that more accurately represented what Trump, thinks, schemed for and actually did is deemed unimportant if it is necessary to appease the US president.

No-one with an alert and critical mind will fail to make the comparison with the way the BBC represented and reported upon the efforts of Jeremy Corbyn when leader of the Labour Party, and subsequently. These too included the selective editing of his remarks to present them in a particular light.

Palestinians fear war could resume at any moment as Israeli forces hit tent in Khan Younis

Palestinians fear the war could resume at any moment after an Israeli strike hit a tent sheltering a displaced man in Bani Suheila, east of Khan Younis, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reports from Gaza.

Residents told Al Jazeera that the area targeted was outside the so-called “yellow line” — the boundary demarcating territory under Israeli control.

Local health officials said the victim’s body was taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Witnesses said he had not been living within the restricted zone and questioned why Israeli forces would have hit his tent.

Since the start of the ceasefire, at least 241 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, according to local authorities. Israel has claimed those killed were attempting to cross the yellow line — an explanation Palestinians on the ground reject.

Such violations have heightened fears that the fragile truce could break down at any moment. Drones remain constantly overhead, and the sounds of explosions echo as Israeli forces continue to demolish areas beyond the yellow line.

The ongoing destruction and military activity, residents say, have left Gaza’s population bracing for the fighting to resume at any time.

Eight Palestinians were injured in the illegal Israeli settlers’ assaults in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem on Sunday, according to local sources, Anadolu reports.

Illegal Israeli settlers attacked the Al-Arara Bedouin community north of occupied East Jerusalem with stones and sticks, leaving seven Palestinians with varying degrees of injuries, according to the Bedouin rights group Al-Baidar.

The settlers burned the container houses and caused material losses to the residents.

The organization warned that “the continuation of these violations poses a direct threat to the stability of the people and their presence on their lands and paves the way for forced displacement.”

In the Umm al-Khair village of southern Hebron, southern West Bank, another group of settlers attacked Palestinians in the morning while they were working on their lands, local sources told Anadolu.

A young Palestinian was transferred to a hospital for medical attention after getting injured on his face and head.

Israeli attacks have escalated across the occupied West Bank since October 2023, killing more than 1,069 Palestinians and injuring 10,300 others, Palestinian figures showed.

According to the official Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, Israeli forces and illegal settlers carried out 766 attacks against Palestinians, their homes, property, and sources of livelihood across the West Bank in October alone.

In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
