Trump’s Iran War has caused “a massive disruption in the supply chain of fertilizers,” and “clearly we are seeing a crisis emerging” in the agricultural industry, said one UN expert.

A top United Nations official on Tuesday warned that there is a real risk of a global food crisis if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to shipments of fertilizer.

Jorge Moreira da Silva, executive director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), said in an interview with UN News that roughly one-third of global fertilizer shipments flow through the Strait of Hormuz, and its closure has caused “a massive disruption in the supply chain of fertilizers,” and “clearly we are seeing a crisis emerging” in the agricultural industry.

The UN official also emphasized the need for a fast resolution to the crisis to prevent catastrophic food shortages as tensions continued to escalate in the strait in recent days, with both the US and Iran seizing vessels in the area.

“We can’t wait until everything is fixed to at least get something fixed in time for the planting season,” he emphasized. “The planting season has already started, and in most countries in Africa it will end in May. So, if we don’t get some solution immediately, the crisis will be very significant and severe, particularly for the poorest countries and for the poorest citizens.”

While poorer nations are most vulnerable to fertilizer supply shocks, wealthy nations like the US are taking a hit as well.

survey released last week by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) found that 70% of US farmers say the price of fertilizer has grown so high that they will not be able to afford all they need for the 2026 planting season.

Analysis conducted by AFBF found that, since President Donald Trump illegally launched his war with Iran in late February without any congressional approval, “nitrogen fertilizer prices have risen more than 30%, while combined fuel and fertilizer costs have increased roughly 20% to 40%.”

AFBF also found that the cost of widely used urea fertilizers “have increased by 47% since the end of February, marking the largest month-to-month percentage increase” ever.

Zippy Duvall, president of AFBF, warned that “without the necessary fertilizers, we’ll face lower yields and some farmers will reduce acres altogether, which will impact food and feed supplies.”

An analysis published by Bloomberg’s Tracy Alloway on Wednesday found that “all the signs are already pointing to higher prices” for food in the coming weeks thanks to Trump’s Iran War.

“Bank of America’s Commodity Inflation Trendspotter for food and beverage companies shows March input costs up a whopping 373 basis points to 7.9% year-on-year,” explained Alloway. “That jump was driven mostly by diesel and heating oil, meaning we haven’t even seen much impact from things like higher plastics prices or fertilizer just yet.”

Alloway pointed to the skyrocketing price of urea as particularly worrisome for food prices, as once Midwestern farmers start paying more for the fertilizer, “you start seeing higher prices for everything from actual grains to beef, chicken, eggs, ethanol,” and more.

The bottom line, Alloway wrote, is “rising fertilizer prices are now hitting farmers, and eventually those will translate into higher wholesale food prices which will (assuming higher costs are passed onto consumers) eventually land at grocery stores too.”

“The inflationary impulse doesn’t arrive all at once,” she added, “it builds.”

Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil was killed on Wednesday evening in an Israeli strike while carrying out her work in the town of Tayri, southern Lebanon.

Minutes before her martyrdom, Khalil posted on Facebook that Lebanese Civil Defence teams in Rmeish had treated a wounded fighter who arrived in Ain Ebel from Bint Jbeil, before contacting the Lebanese Red Cross to transfer him to a liberated area.

She said Israeli forces stationed in Debel became aware of the wounded man and demanded, in a phone call with paramedics, that he be handed over, threatening to target the ambulance. The paramedics refused.

Khalil added that the fighter later decided to walk to Debel to surrender himself in order to protect the lives of the medics and local residents, as surveillance drones flew at low altitude.

Lebanon witnessed tense hours earlier on Wednesday after Israeli shelling hit the town of Tayri, targeting journalists Amal Khalil and Zeinab Faraj during field coverage. Rescue teams faced difficulties reaching the area, with Israel reportedly preventing paramedics from accessing Khalil’s location for several hours.

Following extensive contacts and movement, ambulance teams, escorted by the army, were able to enter Tayri. Reuters confirmed that Khalil’s body was found inside the damaged building.

Palestinian citizens of Israel commemorated the 78th anniversary of the Nakba (Palestinian catastrophe) under the slogan “Their Independence Day is Our Nakba,” amid restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities on public events.

The commemoration included marches and activities in several depopulated villages, alongside widespread calls for participation. However, the Israeli authorities banned the central unity march, organised annually since 1998 by the Association for the Defence of the Rights of the Displaced.

Former head of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel, Muhammad Barakeh said in a press statement that “the current situation is not related to exceptional security circumstances, but rather reflects a historical reality that has persisted since the establishment of Israel at the expense of the Palestinian and Arab presence.”

“This land has its own authentic narrative and its people who have never left its heart. Their connection to it transcends time, governed by longing and belonging” he added.

Barakeh said that the presence of Palestinians in their depopulated villages is “a natural act reflecting their right and a clear message that they are always destined to return.”

The Association for the Defence of the Rights of the Displaced announced that this year’s “March of Return” will be held digitally via social media platforms at 6:00 PM, after suspending the in-person march due to strict restrictions and systematic obstacles.

In a statement, the association said the decision followed months of preparation under conditions that limited participation and imposed restrictive permit requirements, stressing that suspending the in-person march does not affect the Palestinians’ historical right of return to their lands.

At least 27 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon since March 2, along with many others wounded, the Lebanese Press Syndicate Editors said Thursday.

In a statement, the syndicate condemned Israel’s targeting of a group of journalists in the southern town of Tayri on Wednesday, in which reporter Amal Khalil was killed and her colleague Zeinab Faraj was wounded.

The syndicate said Khalil had previously received death threats from the Israeli army.

“With her killing, the number of journalists and media workers killed has risen to 27, in addition to a large number of injured,” the statement said.

The syndicate called on the Federation of Arab Journalists to work with international and Arab press unions to support Lebanese journalists amid deliberate Israeli attacks.

It also urged journalists working in the field in Lebanon to exercise caution, avoid high-risk areas and coordinate with the Lebanese army and other official security forces in areas exposed to Israeli attacks, including UNIFIL, the Lebanese Red Cross and local relief teams, “to avoid any unexpected fatal risk.”

The syndicate said Israel’s actions against Lebanese civilians, particularly journalists, “have exceeded all limits,” calling on the Lebanese government to take urgent action at international bodies and file a legal case against Israel.

During Wednesday’s attack, Israeli forces prevented the Red Cross and Lebanese army forces from reaching the two journalists and targeted a road linking Tayri and Haddatha to block rescue teams, according to the state news agency NNA.

Since March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed 2,475 people, wounded 7,696 and displaced more than 1.6 million, according to official figures.

A 10-day ceasefire announced by the US on April 16 is set to expire Sunday and has been violated daily by Israel.

‘Time for Half Measures Is Over’: Study Warns of Terrifying Atlantic Ocean Current Collapse

“We must avoid this collapse at all costs,” said a leading current researcher, who warned that “the stability of the entire planet” is at stake.

The global climate crisis is causing a critical Atlantic Ocean current system to weaken much sooner than previously predicted, according to a study published on Thursday. If it stops, scientists say it could pose catastrophic consequences for Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is one of the most important current systems in the world for maintaining the delicate balance of the global climate. It helps to keep colder regions like Europe and the Arctic mild by moving warm water northward and pushes large amounts of carbon deep into the ocean, keeping it out of the atmosphere.

‘Disgusting’: Trump’s Top Economic Adviser Brags About Killing 300,000 ‘High-Paying’ American Jobs

Scientists have feared AMOC’s decline for some time. Previous studies have shown it to be at its weakest point in 1,600 years. But research published this month suggests that a collapse may come much sooner than anticipated.

One study, published Thursday in the journal Science Advances, used climate models and current data to predict the decline in the coming decades.

Researchers found that the system is on course to slow by more than 50% by the end of the century and could pass a significant tipping point by mid-century, at which point its decline would become irreversible.

“We found that the AMOC is declining faster than predicted by the average of all climate models,” said lead researcher Valentin Portmann, of the Inria Research Center of Bordeaux South-West. “This means we are closer to a tipping point than previously thought.”

A major driver of its slowdown has been the rapid melting of Greenland’s freshwater ice sheet into the Atlantic, which has diluted denser saltwater, making it harder to transfer northward.

He explained: “The more rapidly Greenland melts, the more freshwater floods the North Atlantic. This disrupts the sinking process, effectively applying the brakes to the entire system.”

This research followed another study published last week by scientists at the University of Miami, which found that AMOC has been weakening at four latitudes in the Atlantic.

Professor Stefan Rahmstorf, a leading AMOC researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, who was not involved in either study, called it “an important and deeply concerning result” that “confirms that the ‘pessimistic’ climate models—those projecting a severe weakening of the AMOC by 2100—are the most accurate.”

“The most dramatic and drastic climate changes we see in the last 100,000 years of Earth history have been when the AMOC switched to a different state,” Rahmstorf explained.

A shutdown of the current system poses what Canadian climate activist and marine conservationist Paul Watson described as a “domino effect of climatic upheavals.”

Scientists have projected that temperatures in northern Europe could plummet dramatically, with winters in London sometimes reaching below -20°C (-4°F) and those in Norway reaching -48°C (-54°F). It also threatens to dramatically shorten growing seasons, putting food security in peril for hundreds of millions of people.

Tropical storms in the North Atlantic would also become more severe. As the current slows, sea levels are expected to rise, and the greater temperature difference between cooling Europe and the warming tropics can fuel more intense hurricanes and increase the risk of flooding in major coastal cities.

“We must avoid this collapse at all costs,” Rahmstorf said. “The stakes are too high; this isn’t just about Europe’s climate, but the stability of the entire planet.”

Such a dramatic change in the flow of global heat could scramble temperature and rainfall patterns worldwide, putting some areas at greater risk of drought and disrupting the monsoon season that fuels agriculture in many regions.

It also risks becoming self-perpetuating, as the large amounts of carbon released from the ocean could further accelerate AMOC’s collapse. Research published last week found that carbon emissions from the Southern Ocean alone could increase global temperature by about 0.2°C.

“The science is clear: The AMOC is teetering on the edge of collapse, and the window to act is closing,” Watson said. “Yet global leaders remain paralyzed by short-term politics and denial.”

The conclusion of the most recent United Nations climate summit, COP30, has been described as woefully insufficient to address the mounting climate emergency. The roadmap for action released by the host nation, Brazilexcluded any mention of the phrase “fossil fuels” after the conference was overrun by industry lobbyists.

“The time for half-measures is over,” Watson said. “The choices we make in the next decade will determine whether future generations inherit a manageable climate or a world plunged into chaos.”
