A Palestinian newborn died early Saturday after exposure to extreme cold in the Gaza Strip, as severe winter weather compounded the suffering of displaced families living in fragile tents with little protection from the elements, Anadolu reports.

The infant, Mahmoud al-Aqraa, was just seven days old when he died during a powerful storm that swept through the enclave, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

The family had been sheltering in a makeshift tent in Deir al-Balah, where freezing temperatures and violent gusts left residents struggling to keep warm through the night.

“He started shaking badly,” al-Aqraa said. “We tried everything we could, but there was no heat, no safe shelter, nothing to protect him from the cold.”

Emergency crews were unable to reach the family due to the weather, forcing the father to wrap the baby in a blanket and rush him to the nearest field hospital. Medical staff said the infant’s body temperature had dropped to dangerously low levels.

Despite attempts to stabilize and warm him, Mahmoud was later transferred to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where he died several hours later from hypothermia.

Inside the hospital morgue, his father said goodbye to his son, whose small body showed visible signs of cold exposure, including stiffness and discoloration.

Mahmoud’s older brother, Yusuf, stood nearby in tears. “He died from the cold,” the boy said softly. “We don’t have heaters. We only have a few blankets, and even those aren’t enough.”

Exposed to fierce winds and the elements

Gaza’s Civil Defense said earlier Saturday that the ongoing storm had damaged or blown away thousands of tents for displaced families, particularly along the coastline, leaving them exposed as winds reached speeds of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour.

Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal linked the crisis to Israel’s continued blocking of humanitarian and reconstruction aid from entering Gaza.

Basal said the crisis was not simply the result of harsh weather, but a consequence of continued restrictions on the entry of shelter materials and construction supplies.

“This is not a natural disaster,” he said. “It is a man-made humanitarian emergency.”

The Israeli army has killed more than 71,000 people, most of them women and children, and injured over 171,000 others in a brutal offensive since October 2023 that left the Gaza Strip in ruins.

Despite a ceasefire that began last Oct. 10, the Israeli army has continued its attacks, killing 424 Palestinians and wounding 1,189 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Israeli forces killed at least four Palestinians on Sunday in airstrikes and gunfire in the Gaza Strip, in fresh violations of a ceasefire agreement in effect since October, medical sources told Anadolu.

The sources said the bodies of two Palestinians arrived at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis after they were targeted by an Israeli drone strike in the Bani Suheila area east of the southern city, Anadolu reports.

Anadolu correspondent, citing eyewitnesses, said the two were killed in areas still under Israeli military occupation, despite the ceasefire arrangement.

In Gaza City, Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian in an area they had previously withdrawn from under the ceasefire agreement in the Tuffah neighborhood, medical sources said.

The sources also said the body of a 31-year-old man arrived at Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.

In central Gaza, another Palestinian was killed, and four others were wounded after an Israeli drone fired a missile at a group of workers east of the Maghazi refugee camp, according to medical officials.

Earlier Sunday, Israeli forces carried out airstrikes, artillery shelling, and naval fire across multiple areas of the Gaza Strip, in continued violations of the ceasefire deal.

Israeli warplanes launched an airstrike southwest of the southern city of Rafah, while another aerial attack targeted areas east of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, witnesses said.

Israeli artillery also shelled eastern parts of Gaza City, including the Tuffah and Zeitoun neighborhoods, accompanied by gunfire from military vehicles positioned nearby, they added.

In northern Gaza, Israeli aircraft carried out airstrikes and demolition operations targeting buildings east of Jabalia and Beit Lahia, alongside artillery fire, according to local sources.

The areas struck in the north and east of the enclave remain under Israeli military control under the ceasefire arrangement.

Israeli naval vessels also fired several shells toward coastal areas in northern Gaza, locations from which Israeli forces had withdrawn under the truce, witnesses added.

The Israeli army has killed more than 71,000 people, most of them women and children, and injured over 171,000 others in a brutal offensive since October 2023 that has left the Gaza Strip in ruins.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli attacks have continued, killing 442 Palestinians and injuring over 1,200 others, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Hundreds rally in Stockholm to protest US policy in Venezuela, Israeli attacks on Gaza

Hundreds of people took part in a demonstration in the Swedish capital Stockholm, protesting against US military action in Venezuela and Israel’s renewed attacks on Gaza

Hundreds of people took part in a demonstration in the Swedish capital Stockholm, protesting against US military action in Venezuela and Israel’s renewed attacks on Gaza, Anadolu reports.

The protest, held at Odenplan Square, was organized by several civil society groups on Saturday.

Demonstrators accused Israel of violating a ceasefire that began on Oct. 10, 2025, by resuming strikes on Gaza.

They also criticized the US for its military intervention in Venezuela and the detention of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

They also called on Israel to stop its military operations in Gaza and demanded the release of Maduro and his wife.

Speaking to Anadolu, Swedish activist Sigrun Meder said the demonstration aimed to condemn both Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza and the unlawful detention of Venezuela’s leadership.

She said that despite claims of a ceasefire, violence in Gaza was continuing.

“While we witness this horrific genocide taking place before our eyes in Palestine, we see how tents are destroyed by storms. Even though there is supposedly a ceasefire in Gaza right now, the bombings continue, and many people are being killed,” she said.

Emphasizing that the world is going through a period in which international law is not respected, Meder said: “The only country that is forced to comply with international law is Russia, but when it comes to the US, the West, or Israel, they can do whatever they want, and international law is ignored. We are the ones who defend international law in the streets and squares. We defend democracy, and we defend human rights. We stand with Palestine, we stand with Venezuela.”

The US carried out the military operation in Venezuela on Jan. 3, capturing Maduro and his wife. Trump said his administration would “run” Venezuela and its oil assets during a transition period.

Maduro and Flores were subsequently flown out of the country to New York, where they had an initial hearing on drug and weapons charges. They pleaded not guilty to all charges on Monday.

Trump Vows to ‘Do Something’ With Greenland ‘Whether They Like It or Not’

The Trump administration has been ratcheting up threats against Europe in the wake of its invasion of Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro.

President Donald Trump finished up a busy week by once again leveling threats against longtime allies over their refusal to hand Greenland over to US control.

While taking questions from reporters at the White House on Friday, Trump was asked about a reported plan to win over Greenlanders on joining the US by giving them annual $10,000 payments.

“I’m not talking about money for Greenland yet,” the president replied. “I might talk about that, but right now we are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not.”

Trump then explained his purported rationale for making Greenland a US territory.

“If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland,” he said. “And we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor.”

Neither Russia nor China have shown any indication that they want to take over Greenland, which is currently a self-governed Danish territory. Because Denmark is a founding member of NATO, an attack on its territory from Russia or China would trigger a counterattack by all other NATO members, theoretically including the US.

Trump then informed the press that he would “like to make a deal the easy way” to acquire Greenland, before adding that “if we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way.”

The president then claimed that he was a “fan of Denmark,” even though seconds ago he hinted at using military force to seize their territory.

“The fact that they had a boat land there 500 years ago doesn’t mean that they own the land,” Trump said. “I’m sure we had lots of boats go there also.”

The Trump administration has been ratcheting up threats against Europe in the wake of its invasion of Venezuela and the US abduction of President Nicolás Maduro last week.

Top Trump aide Stephen Miller on Monday refused to rule out using the military to take Greenland, telling CNN host Jake Tapper that “we live in a world… that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power.”
