The UN human rights chief urged Israel on Tuesday to revoke its death penalty law, warning against legislative steps targeting Palestinians in violation of international law, Anadolu reports.

Volker Turk encouraged Tel Aviv to step back from the controversial law, which applies “almost exclusively to Palestinians.”

“It is deeply disappointing that this bill has been approved by the Knesset,” he said, highlighting that it is patently inconsistent with Israel’s international law obligations, including in relation to the right to life.

“It raises serious concerns about due process violations, is deeply discriminatory, and must be promptly repealed,” said Turk.

Noting that the controversial law provides that the death sentences, once imposed, must be carried out within 90 days, Turk warned that it is a violation of international humanitarian law.

“The death penalty is profoundly difficult to reconcile with human dignity, and it raises the unacceptable risk of executing innocent people,” he added.

Turk noted that its application to residents of the occupied Palestinian territory “would constitute a war crime.”

The UN human rights chief also expressed alarm at proposals in another bill before the Knesset to establish a Special (Military) Court exclusively to prosecute crimes committed during and in the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Palestinian armed groups.

Israel’s Knesset passed the law Monday, making the death penalty the default punishment for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank convicted of lethal attacks against Israelis.

More than 9,300 Palestinians, including 350 children and 66 women, are being held in Israeli prisons, according to prisoner rights groups and the Israeli Prison Service.

Poland rejects sending Patriot batteries to Mideast despite US request

Poland will not send any of its Patriot air-defense batteries to the Middle East, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Tuesday, after reports that the United States had informally asked Warsaw to consider doing so, Anadolu reports.

Polish daily Rzeczpospolita reported on Tuesday that Washington had unofficially sounded out Poland about deploying one of its two Patriot batteries amid the escalating conflict with Iran and rising missile attacks on US forces and allies in the region.

Kosiniak-Kamysz quickly rejected the idea, writing on X that Poland’s Patriots “serve to protect Polish skies and NATO’s eastern flank.”

“Nothing is changing in this regard, and we are not planning to relocate them anywhere,” he wrote. “Our allies understand perfectly well how important the tasks we have here are. Poland’s security is an absolute priority.”

The ministry also denied suggestions that the United States had pressured Warsaw. Janusz Sejmej, spokesman for the Defense Ministry, told Rzeczpospolita, “The Americans are not pressuring us in any way on these matters.”

Poland’s chief of the general staff, Wieslaw Kukula, also dismissed the reports, writing on X that “no one is asking for it.”

Poland currently has two operational Patriot batteries, both reaching full operational readiness at the end of 2025 after integration into the Wisla air-defense system and the US-made IBCS command network.

Based with the 37th Air Defense Missile Squadron in Sochaczew, the batteries can intercept aircraft and missiles at distances up to 100 kilometers.

Warsaw has long argued that, as NATO’s main eastern-flank state bordering Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, it cannot afford to weaken its own air-defense capability.

Kosiniak-Kamysz made a similar point last year when reports emerged that American Patriots protecting the Rzeszow logistics hub could be moved elsewhere, insisting that “Polish Patriots also remain in Poland.”

The issue highlights growing global pressure on Patriot systems as the conflict with Iran intensifies. Poland has ordered six additional batteries, due to be delivered between 2027 and 2029, but there are concerns the Middle East war could delay missile deliveries because of sharply rising demand from the US and Gulf states.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also ruled out Polish military involvement in the conflict, saying previously that Poland would not send troops to Iran.

Starmer is ‘lying’ over war on Iran

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer speaking during the launch of the Labour Party’s local elections campaign at City College in Wolverhampton, March 30, 2026

Campaigners dismiss PM’s claims that Britain won’t be drawn into conflict and tell him to stop co-operating with Trump

SIR KEIR STARMER is “lying to the British public” on the war on Iran that has “detonated a bomb” on the world’s economy, campaigners slammed yesterday.

The comments came as the Prime Minister insisted Britain would not get “dragged into the Iran war” during Labour’s launch of its local elections campaign in Wolverhampton.

He said: “People look at their screens and they’re worried when they see explosions, infrastructure blown up, the rhetoric that goes with it.

“And therefore it’s really important that I reiterate where I stand and where this government stands, because this is not our war and we are not going to be dragged into it.”

He said that this applies “whatever the pressure” to join in and “whoever it’s coming from.”

But campaigners pointed out that the claims were not true.

Stop the War Coalition convener Lindsey German said: “Keir Starmer is lying to the British public when he claims Britain isn’t being dragged into the US’s war on Iran.

“And people aren’t fooled by his claims that our military bases are being used only for defensive purposes, because the fact is that RAF Fairford is being used to illegally attack Iran.”

Now that’s what I call the art of the deal.

Ahead of what is predicted to be a bruising set of local and devolved parliamentary elections in May, we’re already getting a taste of the economic consequences of Starmer’s inability to keep Britain out of Trump and Netanyahu’s latest Middle East misadventure.

Of all the G20 nations, Britain’s economy will be worst hit by the war on Iran. That’s according to analysis by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released yesterday. The OECD’s assessment also has the UK economy growing by just 0.7% this year, downgraded from the 1.2% it predicted in December, before the war began. By contrast, Italy, France and Germany’s growth will only shrink by 0.2% as a result of the war.

Meanwhile – get this – the US actually had its growth forecast upgraded by the OECD due to an increased demand for US oil, all thanks to its illegal war. Now that’s what I call the art of the deal.

How have we ended up with the worst of all worlds? Well, the UK is heavily overreliant on overseas fuel imports and international trade, and fears of higher inflation mean consumer confidence has collapsed – a fancy way of saying that when things feel uncertain, people are less likely to spend.

Pessimism takes root in UK as shoppers struggle to afford essentials

Millions are dipping into savings or borrowing to get by as the Iran war drives up prices, survey shows

The Iran war has led to a surge in pessimism in the UK as half of households are already struggling to afford everyday essentials.

The escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has driven the price of oil, gas, crop fertiliser and other raw materials sharply higher, threatens to cause another cost of living shock.

The latest Which? consumer insight tracker found that price pressures were forcing half of households, an estimated 14 million, to make at least one adjustment – dip into savings, sell possessions or borrow money – to cover the cost of essentials on a daily basis.

Confidence in the future of the UK economy plummeted by 13 points to a score of -56 in the month to 13 March, the lowest level recorded since the end of 2022, the tracker found.

Which? said this score reflected “a deep-seated pessimism across the country”, with two-thirds (67%) of UK adults now expecting the national economy to worsen over the next 12 months, while just 12% think it will improve.

Confidence has not yet reached the depths of the pandemic, when the score hit -78, or the 2022 cost of living crisis, when it fell to -70, but the drop highlights a growing strain as millions of households continue to struggle.
