“Aid is not a political tool and should not be weaponized in this way,” said an advocate at Save the Children. “The survival and needs of children in Gaza should not have to answer to airstrikes elsewhere.”

In an act described as “collective punishment” against two million Palestinians, Israel announced that it would close off the main entry points for humanitarian aid into Gaza indefinitely in retaliation for strikes launched this weekend by Iran.

Iran launched missiles at Israel on Sunday in response to Israel’s bombing of a densely populated Beirut suburb, which killed civilians and violated a June 1 agreement not to bomb Lebanon’s capital.

‘Yet Another Act of Piracy’: Israel Raids Humanitarian Flotilla Bound for Gaza

In addition to retaliating with new strikes on Iran, Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said on Sunday that “a number of necessary security measures have been implemented” following the missile fire, “including the closure of the crossings into the Gaza Strip, among them the Kerem Shalom Crossing and the Rafah Crossing, until further notice.”

COGAT claimed that closing the crossings “will not affect the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip” because “the substantial quantities of food that have entered the strip since the beginning of the ceasefire significantly exceed the nutritional needs of the population, according to [United Nations] methodologies.”

That is not what actual UN reports say. The World Food Program (WFP) estimated in June that about 1.6 million people living in Gaza, more than three-quarters of the population, were “facing high levels of acute food insecurity” despite the entry of food parcels and other aid since the October 2025 “ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas.

In the first half of May, UN workers identified more than 2,000 cases of acute malnutrition among young children, according to a June report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

That same OCHA report said about 678,000 hot meals were delivered in May, down from 1.5 million per day in mid-March as a result of underfunding and due to Israel’s closures and restrictions at certain entry points. The number of people receiving food parcels in May also dropped to about 820,000, down from 1.1 million in March. The rations that were distributed in May covered only about 75% of the average person’s minimum daily caloric needs, while those distributed in March covered about 50%.

While the amount of aid entering the strip has increased since the ceasefire went into effect, UN data has never suggested that the amount entering “exceeds” the needs of Palestinians. Since the truce began, reports have consistently said the amount of aid entering the strip was only reaching part of the population, and that aid packages only contained part of the needed nutritional value, which did not meet the terms of the agreement.

Israel, which has been accused of using starvation as a “weapon of war” against Gaza by UN bodies and major human rights groups, previously closed all crossings into the strip at the start of its military assault against Iran in late February.

This not only halted the entry of food and medical aid but also blocked medical evacuations for sick and injured Palestinians, which were desperately needed due to Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s medical system. Even as entry points reopened in the following weeks, aid entry never returned to previous levels.

COGAT said on Monday that “the crossings will be reopened gradually, subject to an ongoing operational assessment and under security restrictions designed to ensure the safety of all personnel present at the crossings on both sides,” though it provided no clear timeframe or indication of how much aid would be allowed in.

“Aid is not a political tool and should not be weaponized in this way. The survival and needs of children in Gaza should not have to answer to airstrikes elsewhere,” said Ahmad Alhendawi, Save the Children’s regional director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe in a statement on Monday.

“For nearly three years, Gaza has been pummelled so hard by Israeli airstrikes that nothing can grow there and people have been reliant on the already small amount of aid crossing the border—aid that was never enough and is now totally out of reach,” he added. “Children in Gaza have already been starved by design. They should not now be denied water, medicine, shelter, and the other essentials needed to survive. The Israeli authorities must re-open these crossings immediately, lift the siege, and facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid at scale.”

With Israeli leaders openly stating their goal in recent weeks to expand the nation’s occupation of Gaza despite the ceasefire, international observers have suggested that Israel was using the escalation of hostilities with Iran as an excuse to ramp up its brutal treatment of Palestinians, nearly 1,000 of whom have been killed in the strip since the ceasefire went into effect.

The US-brokered ceasefire agreement signed by Israel and Hamas in October required the “full entry of humanitarian aid and relief” into the strip.

“The guarantors of the ceasefire must step in and force Israel to reopen the crossings, resume and triple the aid amounts, and totally stop any attacks on Gaza now,” said Palestinian journalist Abubaker Abed. “This is their job. And they must uphold the ceasefire agreement.”

Israel’s defence minister Yisrael Katz has ordered the army to prepare plans to occupy refugee camps in the occupied West Bank and establish a permanent military presence there, Israeli media reported.

According to the Israeli intelligence website Walla, Katz has instructed the army’s Central Command to draw up operational plans aimed at occupying refugee camps and dismantling what Israel describes as “armed infrastructure”.

The report said the planned operations would mirror the ongoing campaign in the Jenin refugee camp, where Israeli forces entered the camp, displaced residents and demolished large sections of housing. Israeli officials have described the Jenin operation as a success that restored the army’s “freedom of action” in an area it characterised as a security stronghold.

During 2025, the army’s Central Command launched a broad military operation across the West Bank. Following Katz’s instructions, Israeli forces occupied and severely damaged three refugee camps in the Jenin and Tulkarm areas, displacing more than 50,000 residents from the Nur Shams refugee camp and the Tulkarm refugee camp. Military outposts were subsequently established inside those camps.

Israeli authorities claim that armed groups operating in northern West Bank camps fled to surrounding villages as a result of the operations. According to Israeli assessments cited by Walla, maintaining a continuous military presence is intended to dismantle infrastructure, expand the army’s operational freedom and prevent armed groups from rebuilding or reaching a level where they could carry out attacks.

Military officials told the website that operations are carried out immediately when intelligence allows. “Where there is no such opportunity, we act extensively to prevent future growth, systematically dismantling capabilities and infrastructure,” one official was quoted as saying.

Palestinian officials and human rights organisations have warned that such operations amount to collective punishment and risk entrenching long-term military control over densely populated civilian areas in the occupied West Bank.

More than 200 prominent German celebrities and journalists on Thursday urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz to stop arms deliveries to Israel and to impose further sanctions on Tel Aviv over its deadly military campaign in Gaza, Anadolu reports.

In an open letter, the group pointed to the suffering of children in the Gaza Strip and stressed: “We, too, condemn the horrific crimes of Hamas in the strongest possible terms. But no crime legitimizes the collective punishment of millions of innocent people in the most brutal way.”

The letter added that in the Gaza Strip, children who are not part of the war yet bear its burden are starving and dying.

“More than 17,000 have already been killed. Hundreds of thousands are injured, traumatized, displaced, and starving.

The signatories – including actors Liv Lisa Fries (Babylon Berlin), Katharina Thalbach (Miss Merkel), and Benno Furmann (North Face) – acknowledged Merz’s criticism of the Israeli government in recent days. However, they urged the chancellor to take further steps, including halting all German arms exports to Israel, supporting the suspension of the EU Association Agreement with Israel, and demanding an immediate ceasefire and unhindered access for humanitarian aid.

“These steps are deeply aligned with European values and would make it unmistakably clear to the Israeli government that even its closest allies can no longer tolerate the suffering and that words are no longer enough,” the open letter said.

On Monday, Merz said his government is considering stepping up pressure on Israel over the dire humanitarian situation in the enclave.

The German government “reserves the right” to take concrete measures to increase pressure on Israel to improve “the catastrophic situation” in the Gaza Strip, he said.

He added that the Security Cabinet had not yet made any decisions on the matter but had discussed options.

“We reserve the right, however, to take such steps,” he stressed.

MSF condemns Israel’s ‘use of aid as a tool of war’

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has condemned Israel’s “use of aid as a tool of war in Gaza.”

In a statement released yesterday, the medical organisation said it “strongly condemns” the Israeli-imposed siege on the Gaza Strip, which deprives Palestinian civilians of basic services and vital supplies, “including access to water by cutting electricity”.

Israel is using “collective punishment” and has “instrumentalised humanitarian needs by using it as a bargaining chip” during a period when negotiations are due to be held on the second phase of the ceasefire deal.

“Israeli authorities are yet again normalising the use of aid as a negotiation tool. This is outrageous. Humanitarian aid should never be used as a bargaining chip in war,” said Myriam Laaroussi, MSF emergency coordinator. “The blockade on all supplies is inevitably hurting hundreds of thousands of people and is having deadly consequences.”

“A ceasefire without scaling up humanitarian aid is contradictory,” she warned, adding that the group’s hands would be tied if fuel isn’t allowed into the enclave.

MSF called on “Israeli authorities to respect international humanitarian law and uphold its responsibilities as an occupying power, and to end this inhumane blockade of the Strip.”

Adding that Israel’s allies, who have “ignored this grave violation of international humanitarian law” must “refrain from normalising such actions” and act “to prevent Gaza from plunging further into devastation.”

On 2 March, when the ceasefire deal was due to go into its second phase, Israel announced that it had closed all crossings into Gaza, besieging the devastated Strip. One week later it cut the electricity supply to Gaza’s last remaining desalination plant leaving Palestinians with no way to access clean water.

Critics have warned that Israel is trying to force Palestinians to extend the first phase of the ceasefire deal, see the release of the Israeli captives held in Gaza in return for no concessions from the occupation state. It would then return to bombing the enclave in an effort to force Palestinians out of it.

Fears of starvation in Gaza as Israel continues to blockade humanitarian aid

FEARS grew today that Palestine’s population may once again be on the verge of starvation following a week-long Israeli blockade.

Israel imposed the siege to try to force Hamas to accept a different ceasefire deal to the one agreed in January.

It blocked the entry of aid shipments to Gaza on Sunday, hours after the ceasefire deal’s first phase had expired, sparking fears of hunger and more hardships during the holy month of Ramadan, which began over the weekend.

Hamas spokesman Abdel-Latif al-Qanou said Israel is pursuing “a policy of starvation and collective punishment” in Gaza by keeping land crossings closed and preventing the entry of crucial aid.

The siege is a “flagrant violation of international and humanitarian laws and a war crime that the world must stop and hold its perpetrators accountable,” he said.

“We renew our call to the international community, all human rights and humanitarian institutions and all free people of the world to force the zionist occupation to open the crossings, bring in relief and medical aid – and end the suffering of our people.”
