Pakistan accuses the Taliban government in Afghanistan of acting as a proxy of India and sheltering and aiding militant groups involved in carrying out attacks on its civilians and military installations.

Neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to a temporary ceasefire on Wednesday, October 15, after almost a week-long series of heavy cross-border clashes between their armed forces killed and wounded scores of people and caused substantial damage to the civilian infrastructure.

In a statement, Pakistan’s foreign office claimed that the ceasefire was initiated at the request of Afghanistan and will last for 48 hours from 6 pm on Wednesday. It said that “during this period, both sides will make sincere efforts to find a positive resolution to this complex but solvable issue through constructive dialogue,” Dawn reported.

However, the statement posted by the Taliban’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on his X page claimed the ceasefire was agreed upon Pakistan’s request and will last until it is violated.

Pakistan also acknowledged that the ceasefire was reached through the intervention of some “friendly countries”, without naming them.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, in a TV interview, also acknowledged the role played by the “friendly countries” in achieving the ceasefire. However, he expressed his apprehensions, claiming the ceasefire may not last long.

He accused the Taliban administration in Afghanistan of fighting a proxy war against his country on India’s behalf.

India and Pakistan have fought several wars since their independence from British colonial occupation in 1947 over Kashmir and other issues. In May this year, armed forces from both countries clashed for days over the attack on tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, killing scores of civilians on both sides of the border.

Though the Taliban traditionally has been close to Pakistan, where it was born as an armed religious movement during the US-backed war against Soviet presence in Afghanistan during the 1980s, the dynamics between them have changed since it took power in Afghanistan in August 2021, after the US withdrawal.

Pakistan has accused the Taliban government of aiding and supporting Tahreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which is its offshoot in the country. The TTP has been banned by the Pakistan government after holding it responsible for carrying out several attacks and killing thousands of its civilians and armed forces.

Clashes across Durand Line

The present cross-border hostility between Afghanistan and Pakistan emerged on October 11, after the Taliban allegedly launched an attack on the Pakistani border post, killing 23 of its soldiers.

Before that, on October 9, the Taliban had accused Pakistan of carrying out airstrikes inside Afghanistan territory. Though its forces are engaged in an operation against the TTP in the border regions, Pakistan did not respond to the Taliban’s accusation.

In response to an alleged Taliban attack, Pakistan forces launched multiple military attacks inside Afghanistan, reportedly killing hundreds of Taliban soldiers and civilians.

On Tuesday, Pakistan again alleged that the Taliban launched a coordinated attack on its Chaman border in its Balochistan province, destroying the Pakistan-Afghanistan “friendship gate” and injuring several civilians.

Pakistan claimed it launched air strikes on certain targets in Kandahar and several other places inside Afghanistan on Wednesday in retaliation.

The Taliban-led government denied claims of attacks on Tuesday calling Pakistan’s attacks on Wednesday unprovoked.

There were also reports of clashes between Taliban and Pakistan army across the over 2,500 kilometers long border known as Durand line just before the ceasefire was announced.

Explosions were recorded in Kabul as well though it was not clear whether it was due to attacks carried out by the Pakistani forces.

Following the clashes, Pakistan has shut its Turkham border crossing with Afghanistan, leaving thousands of people who move across the border every day for trade and other purposes stranded.

Both the countries have warned each other not to launch further attacks, vowing stronger responses. Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s foreign minister, also reiterated his country’s demand that the Taliban take concrete measures against TTP and other such groups.

The UN had urged both the countries to cease hostilities and resolve their differences through dialogue. Its mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, welcomed the declaration of a ceasefire on Thursday.

China condemns US airstrikes in Caribbean, backs Venezuelan sovereignty

This week, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally expressed its opposition to US military operations in the Caribbean, following an attack on October 15 that left six people dead on Venezuelan vessels. Spokesperson Lin Jian stated that Beijing “opposes the use or threat of force in international relations” and rejects external interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs.

In response to questions from reporters, Lin Jian criticized Washington’s unilateral actions, which mobilized warships and a nuclear submarine in the region under the pretext of combating drug cartels. The October 15 attack brings the total number of deaths in five recent US military actions against Venezuelan vessels to 27.

China also expressed support for the declaration by 33 Latin American countries on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone on the continent.

China supports strengthening international cooperation to combat transnational crimes and opposes unilateral law enforcement actions by the United States against vessels from other countries that exceed reasonable and necessary limits,” said the Chinese spokesman.

Venezuelan diplomatic mobilization

This week, the Venezuelan Embassy in Beijing also summoned diplomatic representatives from various countries and international media outlets to denounce what it classifies as a risk of military invasion. Ambassador Remigio Ceballos Ichaso told Brasil de Fato that Washington is conducting “a disinformation campaign aimed at justifying an intervention.”

“Accusing Venezuela of being a drug cartel is completely false, a fiction that they have been trying to impose on the international community for decades,” said Ceballos Ichaso.

The Venezuelan government has received expressions of solidarity from Nicaragua, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico. Humberto Collado, commercial attaché at the Nicaraguan embassy in China, said that “what the US is doing is threatening a democratic country, its president, and its entire people, undermining the socio-political stability of the region.”

Russian and UN position

Russia criticized US military actions through statements by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, stating that such operations “represent an escalation in the region, violate international law and Venezuelan sovereignty.”

The World Drug Report 2025 from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recognizes Venezuela’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and points out that the country is not among the main international drug corridors. The UN has emphasized that any military or coercive intervention that violates the sovereignty of a member state is contrary to the United Nations Charter.

US sanctions against Venezuela began in 2006, during Hugo Chávez’s administration, intensifying after 2013 with Nicolás Maduro, totaling about a thousand restrictive measures by 2019. These measures resulted in food and medicine shortages, restrictions on access to essential resources, and impacts on the Venezuelan economy.

Internal mobilization

President Nicolás Maduro ordered national defense military exercises with the participation of Bolivarian militias and volunteers, including fishermen and rural residents. The government characterized the mobilization as defensive and voluntary, aimed at ensuring national sovereignty.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Maduro reiterated Venezuela’s commitment to peace and international law. Foreign Minister Samuel Moncada stated that “the real threat to regional peace is the presence of US military and nuclear weapons in the Caribbean.”

Community action against genocide and worker’s strike: Rotterdam port brought to a halt

The Port of Rotterdam faced major disruptions over the past several days as dockworkers and activists launched strikes and direct actions.

The Port of Rotterdam, one of Europe’s most important logistics hubs, faced serious obstructions over the past several days as a result of dockworkers’ strikes and direct action against complicity in genocide, human rights violations, and pollution.

According to the collective Geef Tegengas, approximately 800 people took part in a blockade of the port’s railway track as part of an international campaign organized by the network alongside Soulèvements de la Terre (France), Code Rouge, Stop Arming Israel, Soulèvements de la Terre Bruxelles (Belgium), and Disrupt Germany. Coordinated actions took place between October 10 and 12 under the umbrella of the International Days of Action Against Bombs, Barrels, and Bullshit.

“The organizations are fighting back against the global, capitalist system that is raining down bombs, pumping out pollutants, creating inequality, colonizing lands, fracturing communities and destroying ecosystems,” the coalition said in a joint statement.

Nora Kilembe of Geef Tegengas warned about the role of Rotterdam’s port in what the groups term as the Logistics Empire: a global network of transport companies, port authorities, shopping platforms, and terminals that prioritize private profit over human life and the planet’s health. “The Logistics Empire, Port of Rotterdam up front, is destroying our planet,” Kilembe said. “Indigenous peoples are robbed of their self-determination whilst Israel is committing a genocide against Palestinians. In the West, we are being brainwashed to keep on buying to fill our empty lives, leading to mass depression and alienation. All so the ultra-rich can further enrich themselves. This system of death can only be brought down if we fight back together.”

Geef Tegengas emphasized the action targeted the sector’s deep complicity in Israel’s genocide and other human rights abuses. “We demand that the port of Rotterdam immediately implement a complete arms and trade embargo on Israel, stop importing products and raw materials from areas where human rights are violated, and make a plan to phase out all polluting waste as quickly as possible,” they said.

With the blockade, the group stressed, activists are reclaiming public control over vital infrastructure. “The port belongs to the people, not to big business,” they said. “They are demanding control over this port.”

The blockade coincided with the largest lashers’ – dockworkers responsible for securing cargo on vessels – strike in decades, which caused a backlog that port authorities say could take until the end of October to clear. Activists pointed out that the industrial action only reinforces the broader struggle for justice in Europe. “Their struggle for good wages and better working conditions is one that we wholeheartedly support,” they said, adding that the lashers’ demonstration of collective power should serve as an inspiration for all movements seeking a fairer society.

Workers and students across Spain strike for Palestine

Trade unions and youth organizations in Spain held strikes and mass protests in solidarity with Palestine on October 15.

Trade unions and youth organizations across Spain held strikes and nationwide demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine on Wednesday, October 15. Tens of thousands of people joined rallies in major cities, demanding an end to ties with Israel, justice for Palestine, and expressing opposition to Europe’s militarization. They also criticized Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s administration for failing to take all necessary measures to sanction Israel despite formal condemnations of the genocide.

The actions in Spain came just weeks after two general strikes brought Italy to a halt over similar demands, underscoring that solidarity with Palestine remains a key moment for social movements in Europe.

Speaking at one of the rallies, Coral Latorre from the Students’ Union (Sindicato de Estudiantes) highlighted the crucial role of students and young people in sustaining the solidarity movement. Approximately 25,000 students participated in the demonstrations at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, with thousands more joining protests in Barcelona, Tarragona, Valencia, and other cities following a wave of successful mobilizations earlier this month.

“Today we’re not only students [going on strike], but also workers,” Latorre said. “From the first hours of the morning, pickets, roadblocks, rallies in companies and factories, entire enterprises on strike… We said: we’ll block everything, and that’s what we’re doing with this day of general strike.”

Frustration over the praise received by the recent ceasefire agreement announced by US President Donald Trump and Israeli authorities added fuel to the demonstrations. Protesters denounced the hypocrisy of European leaders congratulating Trump for his “peacemaking skills” while maintaining political, economic, and military cooperation with Israel and investing billions of euros in militarization.

“The ‘peace’ of the genocidal is not peace,” Latorre warned. “It is a farce to crown genocide, to turn Palestine into a colony, and to strip the Palestinian people of their right to exist […] This plan will bring neither justice nor freedom for Palestine.”

Workers’ organizations, including the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), contextualized European governments’ support for Israel under their broader programs of militarization and austerity. While workers have mobilized for peace and solidarity with Palestine since the beginning of the genocide, governments have instead chosen policies that fund arms manufacturers and eliminate social protections. “CGT bases the call for this day of strike in the fight for a redistribution of public spending in favor of workers, and against the rise of public investment in items aimed at defense and militarization,” the trade union wrote.

The CGT emphasized that ongoing trade relations with Israel and increased military expenditure both show “that public budgets are being used for interests far from the reality that workers live.”

In some cities, protesters reported police repression. According to the Students’ Union, attempts to suppress Palestine solidarity actions in Europe following the ceasefire announcement should be taken as a clear signal to intensify mobilization, not scale it back.

“The [Trump] plan is a scam made by the executioners of the Palestinian people,” Latorre said. “That is why mobilization must continue, and our efforts must be redoubled. They want us to leave the streets precisely because now we’re coming out in greater numbers than ever: we have to keep pushing and keep raising our voices.”

The unloading of 900 tons of humanitarian aid for Gaza is underway from Turkiye’s 17th “Goodness Ship,” which arrived at Egypt’s Al Arish Port on Friday, Anadolu reports.

The vessel departed on Tuesday from Turkiye’s southern Mersin International Port and reached Al Arish Port after a voyage across the Mediterranean.

Coordinated by Turkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the ship carries about 900 tons of aid supplies prepared to help meet the urgent needs of Gaza residents.

The cargo includes ready-to-eat meals, canned goods, and baby formula.

The 17th “Goodness Ship” is part of Turkiye’s ongoing humanitarian efforts to deliver relief as humanitarian suffering deepens in Gaza, continuing a series of aid missions sent since the start of the crisis.
