Defying Trump, Venezuela VP Says ‘We Will Never Again Be a Colony of Any Empire’

“What is being done to Venezuela is barbaric,” said Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed the role of interim president following the US abduction of Nicolás Maduro.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed the role of interim president following the US abduction of Nicolás Maduro, said in a televised address Saturday that “we will never again be a colony of any empire,” defying the Trump administration’s plan to indefinitely control Venezuela’s government and exploit its vast oil reserves.

“We are determined to be free,” declared Rodríguez, who demanded that the US release Maduro from custody and said he is still Venezuela’s president.

“What is being done to Venezuela is barbaric,” she added.

Rodríguez’s defiant remarks came after US President Donald Trump claimed he is “designating various people” to run Venezuela’s government, suggested American troops could be deployed, and threatened a “second wave” of attacks on the country if its political officials don’t bow to the Trump administration’s demands.

Trump also threatened “all political and military figures in Venezuela,” warning that “what happened to Maduro can happen to them.” Maduro is currently detained in Brooklyn and facing fresh US charges.

Rodríguez’s public remarks contradicted the US president’s claim that she privately pledged compliance with the Trump administration’s attempts to control Venezuela’s political system and oil infrastructure. The interim president delivered her remarks alongside top Venezuelan officials, including legislative and judicial leaders, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, a projection of unity in the face of US aggression.

“Doesn’t feel like a nation that is ready to let Donald Trump and Marco Rubio ‘run it,’” said US Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who condemned the Trump administration for “starting an illegal war with Venezuela that Americans didn’t ask for and has nothing to do with our security.”

DONALD TRUMP’S unprovoked attack on Venezuela and his kidnapping of its President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, to face trumped-up drug-trafficking charges in New York, are an outrage against international law and the sovereignty of nation states.

They confirm that the undisguised seizure of other countries’ resources is to be the new normal for the outlaw regime in Washington — and, in line with its National Security Strategy published in November, that it will act to break every government in Latin America that pursues an independent foreign or domestic policy.

Trump’s accusations that the Venezuelan state is involved in drug-trafficking — which have already led to the murder of well over 100 seafarers on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific — have been levelled too at the Mexican government, and Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro.

While bragging about his plans for Venezuela on Saturday Trump indicated that socialist Cuba is also something “we’ll end up talking about,” while his rants about Venezuela having “stolen” (that is, taken into public ownership) oil reserves that had been exploited by US corporations logically put any country that wants control of its natural resources on Washington’s menu.

Stop the War warns government to ‘expect a very large riposte’ against its repression of pro-Palestine activism

PALESTINE protesters kicked off the New Year by smashing up Israeli-linked weapons factories, with Stop the War Coalition warning the government today of a “very large riposte” against its repression.

Activists broke into a Scottish aerospace factory minutes into 2026, attacking machinery and equipment with hammers and spray-painting slogans on the walls on Thursday.

Video shared by the protesters online showed computers and manufacturing equipment being hit with large hammers by people wearing black gloves and face coverings.

Footage further showed fire extinguishers being emptied into machinery at the Bruntons Aero Products site at the Inveresk Industrial Estate in Musselburgh, East Lothian, and the phrases: “There is only one way this ends” and “Drop Leonardo” being graffitied in red paint.

A spokesperson for a so-called “autonomous group” that has claimed responsibility said that Bruntons were targeted for supplying the Italian arms giant, which itself supplies Israel with aircraft and parts.

And today, a coalition of Bristol-based solidarity groups marched from Elbit Systems UK’s factory in Filton to a local police station to hand in evidence of alleged crimes by Israel’s biggest weapons manufacturer.

The group slammed the government for “continuing to ignore the four hunger strikers incarcerated without charge or trial” as Heba Muraisi marked day 61 of her strike.

Israel begins revoking licenses of 37 international organizations delivering aid to Gaza

Israel on Sunday began revoking the operating licenses of 37 international organizations delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, saying they failed to meet requirements under new registration rules, according to the Israeli broadcasting authority KAN.

On Tuesday, the Israeli government began sending official notices to dozens of international organizations informing them that their licenses would be canceled starting from January 2026, and requiring them to end their activities by March of the same year.

“Following the entry into force of the registration mechanism for international organizations in Gaza, the process of barring 37 international organizations from operating has begun,” said the broadcaster.

Israel claims that “these organizations collectively transferred less than 1% of total humanitarian aid throughout the war, and that the scope of aid will not be affected by this decision,” the broadcaster reported.

The broadcaster claimed that security investigations revealed the involvement of employees from Doctors Without Borders in “terrorist activities,” alleging that in two main cases, the organization withheld full information about the identities and roles of its staff.

However, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz, Israel’s decision in November to revoke the licenses of international relief organizations is rooted in purely political reasons.

Israel previously took similar steps against the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). In 2024, the Knesset passed legislation banning the UN agency’s activities in Israel, citing allegations that some UNRWA employees were involved in the Oct. 7, 2023, events, claims the agency has denied. The UN has said UNRWA adheres to strict neutrality standards.

Israeli authorities later escalated measures against the agency, passing a law to cut water and electricity supplies to UNRWA facilities.

3 Palestinians killed by Israeli gunfire in southern Gaza despite ceasefire

The Israeli army killed three Palestinians on Sunday and carried out a series of airstrikes across various parts of the Gaza Strip, Anadolu reports.

One Palestinian was killed after an Israeli drone opened fire in an area from which the army had withdrawn under the ceasefire agreement northwest of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, a medical source told Anadolu.

The Israeli army also killed a fisherman, another medical source said.

According to local sources, Israeli naval forces fired gunshots off the coasts of Khan Younis and Rafah in southern Gaza earlier Sunday.

On the northwestern outskirts of Rafah, a medical source said another Palestinian was shot in the head by Israeli forces, describing his condition as “critical.”​​​​​​​

Local sources said that the area where the Palestinian was injured is among those from which the Israeli army withdrew under the ceasefire agreement.

A 15-year-old boy was killed by Israeli gunfire in the Joura Al-Lout area, south of the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, from which the army had withdrawn under the agreement, a medical source told Anadolu.

Another Palestinian sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh after the Israeli naval opened fire off the coast of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, medical sources and eyewitnesses told Anadolu.

Israeli warplanes also carried out a series of airstrikes on various areas north and west of Rafah.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army carried out demolitions of residential buildings in eastern Khan Younis, accompanied by artillery shelling of areas that are under its control under the agreement.

Separately, Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes on different areas in northern Gaza and east of Gaza City.

In central Gaza, Israeli military vehicles opened indiscriminate fire toward the eastern areas of the Bureij refugee camp.

Since the ceasefire agreement came into effect on Oct. 10, the Israeli army has committed hundreds of violations, killing 420 Palestinians and wounding 1,184 others, according to the Health Ministry.

The ceasefire halted Israel’s two-year war that killed nearly 71,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children, injured more than 171,200 others, and left the enclave in ruins. But despite the ceasefire, Israel’s deadly attacks on Gaza continue.
