“You don’t cut out investigators unless you’re hiding something.”

The FBI on Thursday informed investigators in Minnesota that it would not be cooperating with them in probing the deadly shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good by a federal immigration agent.

Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), said that the probe into Good’s death “would now be led solely by the FBI,” which would leave his agency without “access to the case materials, scene evidence, or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation.”

“Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses, and information collected,” Evans added, “we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands. As a result, the BCA has reluctantly withdrawn from the investigation.”

As noted in a post on Bluesky from MPR News reporter Jon Collins, the Minnesota BCA has a Force Investigations Unit that was created in the wake of the 2020 murder of George Floyd to “restore trust in investigations when law enforcement kills civilians.”

Insider sources told independent journalist Radley Balko that the FBI was “initially open to a concurrent investigation” with the Minnesota BCA, but then Trump-appointed Minnesota US Attorney Daniel Rosen “intervened” and barred the agency from cooperating with local officials on the probe.

“Practically, unless something changes, Rosen’s intervention means there will be no independent police agency investigating the shooting,” Balko added. “It will be left entirely to Kash Patel’s FBI. Any chance of state charges will be entirely reliant on the FBI investigation and what evidence it decides to share.”

When asked by a journalist about the decision to end cooperation with Minnesota investigators on Thursday, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem insisted that “they have not been cut out,” but said that rather “they don’t have any jurisdiction in this investigation.”

Noem’s assertion drew immediate criticism from Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee in the US House of Representatives.

“You don’t cut out investigators unless you’re hiding something,” they wrote in a social media post. “Kristi Noem’s DHS is covering up the killing of a US citizen.”

Several legal experts also debunked Noem’s claim that Minnesota state law enforcement agencies have no jurisdiction to investigate the killing of a resident on the streets of their state’s largest city.

Fordham University School of Law professor John Pfaff accused Noem of “openly lying,” and pointed to a statement on the FBI’s own website stating that “state and local law enforcement agencies are not subordinate to the FBI, and the FBI does not supervise or take over their investigations.”

Attorney Ken White, a former federal prosecutor, argued that Noem’s statement should be a wakeup call to other state governments when it comes to cooperating with federal agencies during Trump’s second term.

“It is the position of the Trump administration that its agents can come into any state and city in America… and kill people,” he wrote, “and that state and city have no jurisdiction to inquire about it. Treat any Trump official accordingly.”

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, meanwhile, vowed to investigate Good’s death, regardless of the federal government’s cooperation.

“State authorities can investigate anyway,” Ellison told CNN. “We don’t need their authority. I mean, it’s at least arguable, and I believe substantially arguable, that there’s a violation of Minnesota statutes here, you know, and I can think of a number of potential charges. All of them depend on an investigation, though, and the federal government can’t stop Minnesota from doing its own.”

“They’re just animals,” said a local school official of the federal agents. “I’ve never seen people behave like this.”

Federal immigration enforcement agents on Wednesday swarmed a high school in Minneapolis, where footage and photographs showed them handcuffing school staff members and firing chemical irritants at students.

According to a report from KSTP 5 Eyewitness News, the agents descended upon Roosevelt High School on Wednesday afternoon, mere hours after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot 37-year-old Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good.

A witness who watched the raid described seeing administrators and staff trying to get the agents away from the building to stop them from apprehending students.

The witness also said that the agents began deploying pepper spray after some students started protesting against their presence on school property.

A Roosevelt High School official confirmed to MPR News that agents wearing US Border Patrol uniforms pepper sprayed students, while also firing pepper balls at them.

Video footage taken from the scene shows agents deploying chemical irritants at demonstrators.

The school official also told MPR News that the agents handcuffed two staff members at the school, and they described getting into a physical confrontation with an agent as they were trying to tell them to leave school property.

“The guy, I’m telling him like, ‘Please step off the school grounds,’ and this dude comes up and bumps into me and then tells me that I pushed him, and he’s trying to push me, and he knocked me down,” the official said. “They don’t care. They’re just animals. I’ve never seen people behave like this.”

In the wake of the raid on the high school, Minneapolis Public Schools announced that it would be canceling all classes for the rest of the week “out of an abundance of caution,” citing “safety concerns” for faculty and students.

Celia Mejia, a Minneapolis woman whose daughter attends the Green Central Elementary School in the southern part of the city, told KSTP 5 Eyewitness News that she had to pick up her daughter on Wednesday after the school went on lockdown after federal immigration agents were spotted in the area.

“That was way too close to school to feel comfortable,” Mejia said.

Julia Haas, another local resident who picked up her child at the elementary school after it went into lockdown, told KSTP 5 Eyewitness News that she was “very” frightened by the ordeal.

“Nobody should have to deal with this ever,” Haas emphasized.

The reasons for the raid on the high school were unclear, and the US Department of Homeland Security did not respond to KSTP Eyewitness 5 News’ or MPR News’ requests for comment.

‘Sick, Malicious Lie’: Trump Caught Pushing ‘Alternate Reality’ Version of Minneapolis ICE Shooting

“The right-wing bullshit machine is operating at full steam and across all cylinders today,” said one critic.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday posted an account of the deadly shooting in Minneapolis by a federal immigration officer that was completely at odds with all evidence seen so far.

In a post on Truth Social, the president claimed that the woman killed in her car by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over” him, forcing him to fire his weapon at her in self-defense.

Trump further claimed that it “is hard to believe” that the ICE officer “is alive” after being supposedly run over.

Eyewitness videos taken at the scene of the incident, however, do not show the officer getting run over at all. In fact, the officer can be seen walking around after discharging his weapon, with no signs of any injury.

In fact, the video Trump posted on his Truth Social that he claims shows the officer being run over does not at all show the officer being run over, but rather stepping safely out of the way as the car starts moving forward.

The New Republic‘s Greg Sargent carefully examined the video posted by Trump and concluded that it “demonstrates nothing close to what” the president claimed it showed.

“This is a sick, malicious lie from Trump,” Sargent commented.

Reporter Sam Stein of the Bulwark also provided a swift debunking of Trump’s claims.

“Hard to believe the ICE officer is still alive, writes the president,” Stein wrote on X, “of an ICE officer who was not hit at all and was well enough to go run down the street to check on the woman he had killed.”

John Hopkins University economist Filipe Campante was struck by just how little effort the president feels he needs to exert to make his lies convincing.

“That he chooses the ‘me or your lying eyes?’ approach, in the full knowledge that there are multiple videos out there, is a striking commentary on the nature of propaganda in the modern information environment,” Campante wrote on Bluesky. “Censorship is no longer viable, so the approach is to use your own content provision to drown out any negative facts/evidence.”

Tour guide and author Ben Edwards marveled at the president’s ability to make completely fact-free assertions.

“The country is slowly starting to come apart,” Edwards observed. “Trump lives in an alternate reality. He cannot speak a word of truth.”

Disinformation researcher Kate Starbird warned that Trump’s low-effort propaganda was still likely to prove effective with his followers.

“The right-wing bullshit machine is operating at full steam and across all cylinders today,” Starbird wrote, “strategically framing the horrific ICE killing of a Minnesota woman to defend/bolster their political aims. For example, Trump’s message… will shape how his supporters (willfully mis)interpret the video evidence.”

‘This Is an Insane Plan’: Democrats Fume After Briefing on Trump Plot to Steal Venezuela’s Oil

The Trump administration “is going to be spending just as much time running Venezuela as they are running America,” Sen. Chris Murphy said in an address to voters. “That’s terrible news for you.”

Democratic lawmakers were stunned as they emerged from a briefing Wednesday with Trump administration officials on the White House’s plan for Venezuela following the US invasion last week—a meeting that marked the first time all members of the US Senate and House were briefed on the details of the attack and President Donald Trump’s intentions going forward in the South American country.

“We learned a lot, I’m glad we had the briefing,” a visibly shaken Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told reporters. “But this is going to be a very rough ride for the United States.”

The senators and later members of the House were briefed by officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Attorney General Pam BondiCIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Dan Caine.

As Rubio told the press after the meeting, the lawmakers learned about a three-step process the White House is planning, starting with an effort to “stabilize” Venezuela by seizing and selling 30-50 million barrels of oil and then controlling how the proceeds are dispersed.

The US will then ensure “American, Western, and other companies have access to the Venezuelan market in a way that’s fair” before ensuring that the third step is “one of transition,” claimed Rubio.

Murphy said the proposal amounts to “stealing the Venezuelan oil at gunpoint for a period of time, undefined, as leverage to micromanage the country.”

“This is an insane plan,” he said after the briefing. “The scope and insanity of that plan is absolutely stunning.”

In a video he posted on social media, Murphy spoke directly to US voters about how Trump’s plan represents not only “corruption” that will benefit the president’s “energy industry and Wall Street friends” and a “failure to learn lessons” from the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also an abandonment of working families across the US.

“This is going to be a multi-billion-dollar effort which is going to take money—your money—but also enormous time,” said the senator. “Donald Trump, the White House, everybody there is going to be spending just as much time running Venezuela as they are running America. That’s terrible news for you, for the American taxpayer. Because there’s huge problems here at home. Healthcare premiums, prices going up, and now the United States government is going to be spending most of its time on many days running the country of Venezuela.”

At a press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt elaborated on Rubio’s comments, saying that the decisions of Venezuela’s interim authorities—including Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed power after President Nicolás Maduro was abducted by US forces last week—“are going to be dictated by the United States of America.” She added that it is premature to discuss elections in the country.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) told reporters after the House’s classified briefing that “there has to be a timeline for elections,” while Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) said, “It’s like they’ll wave a magic wand and things will turn out the way they want.”

Numerous polls have shown that Trump’s escalation against Venezuela, which has also included dozens of boat bombings since September that have killed more than 100 people whom the White House claimed were trafficking drugs to the US, is broadly unpopular with Americans. Nearly two-thirds of respondents to a Quinnipiac University survey said last month that they opposed US military operations in Venezuela.

“Across America, people are just saying, what the hell is going on?” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said after the briefing. “We need answers as to how long this is going to last. We need answers to how many troops, how much money, are there guardrails, things we don’t do, and a number of things that we had talked about were very troubling.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) was among the lawmakers who said the White House briefing made clear that Congress must hold public hearings on the Trump administration’s operations in Venezuela, adding that oil companies—who Trump openly said on Sunday were informed of the military strike and capture of Maduro before they happened—“seem to know more about Trump’s secret plan to ‘run’ Venezuela than the American people.”

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) added that the US is “four months into a sustained military operation” and has killed more than 200 so-called “enemies.”

“American troops have been injured,” he said. “We have the US forces arranged around Venezuela. Yet neither the House nor the Senate have been willing to hold a single public hearing.”

Emily Heller, a Minneapolis resident who witnessed the shooting, told Minnesota Public Radio that she saw a federal agent confronting a woman who was sitting in her car and telling her to leave the area during an immigration enforcement operation in the neighborhood.

“She was trying to turn around, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was in front of her car, and he pulled out a gun and put it right in,” Heller told MPR. “And he reached across the hood of the car and shot her in the face like three, four times.”

The identity of the woman shot by the agent has not yet been released, but US Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) wrote in a social media post that the woman was a US citizen.

The senator also said that “ICE should leave now for everyone’s safety.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is also demanding that ICE leave the city, according to a post from the city’s official X account.

US Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) echoed Smith and Frey’s calls for ICE to get out of Minneapolis.

“ICE must stop terrorizing our communities and leave our city,” she wrote in a social media post.

Others condemned the shooting as a clear case of criminal excessive force that should be treated as murder.

“This is an execution plain and simple,” said journalist Krystal Ball in reaction to footage of the killing. “If your Trump love or immigrant hatred has you justifying murder, please seek help.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz released a statement saying that his public safety team “is working to gather information on an ICE related shooting this morning,” while vowing to “share information as we learn more.”

“In the meantime, I ask folks to remain calm,” Walz added.

One witness, who was in the neighborhood to act as a legal observer, described horrifying scenes to local reporters:

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, put out a statement acknowledging that an ICE officer had fatally shot the woman and accused her of engaging in “domestic terrorism.”

“ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism,” the agency claimed, without providing any evidence. “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement, and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots.”

Video footage from scene as well as testimony from witnesses, however, betrayed the agency’s version of events. As one social media user said, posting the following video, “Does this look like what you’re claiming?”

A separate video from a different angle (Warning: graphic footage), also shows that the individual in the car was trying to turn the vehicle away from officers, not harm anyone:

Federal officials in the past have made statements about incidents involving protesters that have been flatly contradicted by officers’ own body camera footage.

In November, federal prosecutors dropped assault charges against Marimar Martinez, a woman who was shot multiple times by a US Border Patrol agent in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood, weeks after her attorney claimed to have seen body camera footage that completely undercut officers’ claims.
