Israeli soldiers detain a Palestinian child, Hebron, West Bank

The Palestine Centre for Prisoners’ Studies has reported a sharp rise in the detention and abuse of Palestinian children since the outbreak of the war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, documenting more than 1,800 arrests of minors, including some as young as 10.

In a recent report, the centre said these arrests are not random but part of a systematic policy targeting Palestinian children, within a broader escalation of repression. It added that tens of thousands of children have been detained since the beginning of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

The report noted a significant increase in violations since the start of the war, with harsher forms of abuse and torture against children. It highlighted serious practices such as starvation, which it said led to the death of 17-year-old detainee Walid Ahmad from the town of Silwad, inside Megiddo prison, after his health deteriorated due to lack of food and medical care.

According to the centre, arrests are often carried out in “violent and brutal” ways, including night raids on family homes, destruction of property, and the forcible detention of children. They are then transferred to interrogation centres, where they face beatings and humiliation, and are held in conditions lacking basic health standards.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow will continue strengthening its strategic relationship with Iran and “do everything necessary” to support stability and peace across the Middle East.

Speaking during talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in St. Petersburg, Putin said he had recently received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

“I would like to ask you to convey my sincere thanks and appreciation,” Putin said, adding that Russia intends to maintain and develop its strategic ties with Tehran.

He said the Iranian people are “fighting bravely and heroically for their sovereignty” and expressed hope they would overcome current challenges, with peace prevailing in the country.

Putin stressed that Russia would act in the interests of Iran and the wider region, saying: “We will do everything in our power to serve your interests and the interests of all the peoples of the region, in order to achieve this peace as quickly as possible.”

Araqchi arrived in St. Petersburg earlier on Monday as part of a regional tour that included stops in Pakistan and Oman.

The Palestinian Media Forum has praised international broadcasters that have chosen to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest, describing the move as a stand “with truth and humanity” amid Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the Forum welcomed steps taken by broadcasters in Ireland and Slovenia, saying their actions challenge efforts to use the contest to divert attention from events in Gaza.

The Forum highlighted the decision by Ireland’s national broadcaster to fully boycott Eurovision and refrain from airing the event, calling it a “firm political and ethical message” reflecting public opposition to what it described as the use of cultural platforms to obscure Israeli actions.

It also commended Radiotelevizija Slovenija for announcing it would replace Eurovision programming with documentaries and special coverage focused on Palestine, describing the move as a professional and ethical alternative that centres human realities over entertainment.

According to the Forum, the decisions form part of a broader international response linked to the festival, including protests in several European capitals, withdrawals by artists and jury members, and refusals by some media organisations to broadcast the event in opposition to Israel’s participation.

The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights has said Israel is carrying out a “slow genocide” in Gaza Strip, warning that famine continues to spread as humanitarian access remains severely limited.

Speaking in a televised interview, the commission’s head, Salah Abdel-Aati, said the situation has deteriorated sharply, with aid entering Gaza over the past six months not exceeding 40 per cent of residents’ needs. “Famine continues to take hold in the Strip,” he said.

Abdel-Aati added that Israeli actions have included violations of the ceasefire and the targeting of civilians, stating that 823 people have been killed over the past six months, most of them women and children, with a further 2,280 reported injured.

He said Israeli forces have expanded areas under their control inside Gaza, describing a “yellow line” that now encompasses more than 55 per cent of the territory, with an additional 10 per cent being brought under control, raising the total to around 65 per cent.

He also pointed to recent attacks, including the killing of a mother and two children, and said that 32 civilian police officers and civilians had been killed within a 48-hour period.

Abdel-Aati stated that around 90 per cent of Gaza has been destroyed due to the use of more than 250,000 tonnes of explosives, which he said was equivalent to “12 atomic bombs like those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki”, across an area of roughly 360 square kilometres.

He further said Israel is preventing the entry of caravans and temporary housing, leaving residents living in tents under what he described as catastrophic conditions in both summer and winter, with famine worsening as aid remains far below required levels.

MSM silent over Starmer[‘s Rent boys’] arsonists trial – yet no special reporting restrictions

The UK ‘mainstream’ media are stubbornly silent today on the commencement of the trial of three men on trial for arsonists attacks on property belonging to Keir Starmer. The trial of Ukrainians Roman Lavrynovych, 21,  and Petro Pochynok, 34, along with Ukrainian-Romanian Stanislav Carpiuc, 26 started at the Central Criminal Court in London. All have pled not guilty. The jury was sworn in. Yet it was met by deafening nothingness from the state-corporate press and broadcasters.

Starmer arsonists trial: what’s going on?

The court has not imposed any special reporting restrictions beyond the usual that apply to any criminal case. There is no ‘DSMA‘ (formerly D-notice) government restriction on reporting that the Canary is aware of. Even if there were, it would not be binding and amounts to no more than a government request – one that is supposed to be listed on the DSMA website. Yet no ‘MSM’ are touching it, at least yet.

Lavrynovych faces three separate charges of arson with intent to endanger life. Pochynok and Carpiuc face one count each of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life. All targeted Starmer.

What’s important to note is the context for the case. The CPS has not charged the three under counter-terror laws – therefore, indicating that the alleged crimes were not over Starmer’s politics, or that of the government, but of a personal nature to the PM or his family.
