Ten people were killed and eight others injured Tuesday in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, including two civil defense workers killed while carrying out a rescue mission in Nabatieh despite ceasefire, according to official Lebanese media, Anadolu reports.

An overnight Israeli airstrike targeting an inhabited house in Lebanon’s southern town of Kfar Dounine has killed at least six people and injured seven others, according to the National News Agency (NNA). The wounded were taken to hospitals in Tyre.

Israeli artillery shells also targeted the outskirts of the towns of Mansouri and Majdal Zoun at dawn.

In a separate incident, NNA reported that a Syrian man was killed and his wife wounded after an Israeli drone targeted their motorcycle on the Tayr Debba-Hammadiya road in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon.

Two paramedics, from the Nabatieh regional civil defense center, were killed in an Israeli strike while they were evacuating an injured person following an earlier Israeli raid in Nabatieh, said the agency.

A young civilian was also killed in the same strike, it added.

Since March 2, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed more than 2,840 people, injured over 8,690, and displaced more than 1.6 million, about one-fifth of the population, according to the Lebanese officials.

The Israeli army continues daily strikes in Lebanon and fire exchanges with the Lebanese group Hezbollah despite a ceasefire that was announced on April 17 and extended until May 17.

‘Slow suffocation’: Oxygen crisis threatens patients at Gaza hospitals

Inside the corridors of Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, doctors and nurses anxiously monitor oxygen levels and ventilators as a worsening crisis threatens to cut oxygen supplies to one of Gaza’s largest functioning hospitals, Anadolu reports.

In the neonatal unit, premature babies lie in glass incubators connected to oxygen tubes that help them breathe, while their mothers watch the machines in fear that supplies could be cut off.

In intensive care units, patients depend on ventilators to stay alive as alarms repeatedly sound because of low oxygen pressure. Medical teams are trying to prevent any possible interruption.

Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza has two oxygen-generating stations.

“The main station recently went out of service because of technical failures and a lack of operating oils, while the backup station is working at limited capacity and could stop at any time,” Ismail Abu Nimr, director of engineering and maintenance at the complex, told Anadolu.

Dozens of empty oxygen cylinders line up in the hospital courtyard, waiting to be refilled, reflecting the scale of the crisis as fears grow that the hospital could become unable to meet the needs of its critical departments.

Gaza’s Health Ministry has repeatedly warned of the dangers of Israel preventing the entry of medicines, medical supplies, equipment and related materials, saying the restrictions have catastrophic consequences for health services and patients’ lives.

Official Palestinian reports have also warned of the risks of Israel blocking the entry of spare parts needed to maintain equipment, machinery and vehicles that provide vital services to Gaza residents.

Death sentence

Ahmad al-Farra, director of the Children and Maternity Department at Nasser Medical Complex, said the hospital is experiencing “slow suffocation,” warning that the continued oxygen crisis threatens the lives of hundreds of patients, especially premature babies and intensive care patients.

“Oxygen is the lifeline inside hospitals, especially for babies in incubators, intensive care patients and operating rooms. These patients depend on it completely,” Farra told Anadolu.

He warned that the shutdown of oxygen stations would mean “a real catastrophe and a death sentence for hundreds of patients,” urging the international community to intervene before the service collapses completely.

Abu Nimr said the hospital depends on oxygen stations to supply patients inside its departments and to provide medical cylinders for field hospitals and other health facilities.

He said the main oxygen production station went out of service because parts wore out and the operating oils ran out, without specifying when it stopped operating.

“The second station inside the complex is still running, but at limited capacity and faces the risk of stopping at any time,” Abu Nimr warned.

He said Nasser Medical Complex, like other hospitals in Gaza, has struggled for years to bring in the spare parts and oils needed to maintain the stations, forcing technical teams to use local substitutes “that do not meet specifications.”

Those substitutes caused additional malfunctions and damaged pumps, he said, adding that technical teams are working with limited resources to keep the service running.

Looming catastrophe

The crisis at Nasser Medical Complex reflects the near-total collapse of Gaza’s health sector, especially oxygen production.

Last month, the Health Ministry warned that the only functioning oxygen station in Gaza City and northern Gaza could stop working.

The ministry said at the time that the station was the main source of medical oxygen for patients, especially those with chronic illnesses, and civil society organizations working in health care.

The station has suffered “repeated malfunctions because of heavy pressure and long operating hours, amid a lack of sufficient alternatives,” the ministry said, warning that a cutoff in medical oxygen would put patients’ lives at serious risk.

The ministry warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe as the risk of the station shutting down grows alongside rising demand for oxygen at hospitals and health centers.

It urged international organizations and relevant bodies to quickly intervene to bring in new oxygen-generating stations and ensure a sustainable supply of medical oxygen to health facilities to protect patients’ lives and maintain health services.

25 stations destroyed

Israel destroyed about 25 of Gaza’s 34 oxygen production stations during two years of a brutal war, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The ministry said in separate statements that the stations were destroyed during Israeli army incursions into hospitals as part of its ground operations in Gaza.

The ministry said in May 2025 that only about nine stations remained operational in the enclave, adding that they were working only partially and did not meet patients’ needs.

Israel deliberately targeted Gaza’s health sector during the war, including hospitals, medical facilities and health centers, as well as medical teams and ambulances.

The oxygen crisis is worsening as Israel fails to meet its obligations under the ceasefire agreement in effect since Oct. 10, 2025, including opening crossings and allowing in agreed quantities of medical aid and health-related supplies.

Israel has also violated the agreement through shelling and gunfire, killing 854 Palestinians and wounding 2,453 others, according to Health Ministry figures.

The agreement was reached after Israel’s two-year war that has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, wounded more than 172,000 and caused massive destruction that affected 90% of civilian infrastructure.

An estimated 43,000 people of the 172,000 injured in Gaza since October 2023 have sustained life-changing injuries, including around 10,000 children, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Reinhilde Van de Weerdt, the WHO representative for the occupied Palestinian territory, said the updated estimates reflect the devastating long-term impact of the conflict on Gaza’s population and healthcare system.

Since WHO’s last report in September 2025, nearly 5,000 additional life-changing injuries have been recorded, almost half of them after the ceasefire was announced in October 2025, she said.

According to WHO data, major limb injuries account for the largest share of severe cases, with more than 22,000 recorded, followed by over 5,000 traumatic amputations, more than 3,400 major burns, over 2,000 spinal cord injuries, and more than 1,300 traumatic brain injuries.

READ: ‘Slow suffocation’: Oxygen crisis threatens patients at Gaza hospitals

More than 50,000 injuries now require long-term rehabilitation, Van de Weerdt said.

She noted that nearly 14,000 patients registered for limb reconstruction services between July 2025 and May 2026, with almost half of those assessed requiring additional surgery.

Meanwhile, due to severe shortages in Gaza, only 500 out of 2,300 amputees evaluated between September 2024 and May 2026 have received permanent prosthetics.

Despite mounting needs, rehabilitation services remain critically limited, with no rehabilitation facility fully operational in Gaza, according to the WHO.

Van de Weerdt said more than 400 patients are currently waiting for specialized rehabilitation beds, forcing hospitals to discharge patients early and increasing the risk of permanent disability.

She also warned that no rehabilitation equipment had entered Gaza over the past two years, while 18 shipments containing wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, and rehabilitation devices remain pending clearance.

“The people of Gaza have endured unimaginable suffering,” she said. “They deserve not just emergency care, but the sustained support needed to recover and reclaim their lives.”

Palestine Action barrister wins appeal in contempt case

Rajiv Menon KC faced proceedings which his chambers said were unprecedented in English legal history

A leading human rights barrister has won his appeal against contempt of court proceedings, which were levelled at him for a closing speech in the trial of Palestine Action activists.

The court of appeal’s ruling on Tuesday in the case of Rajiv Menon KC comes as it has also emerged that four of the defendants found guilty in a retrial can be sentenced as terrorists.

Three court of appeal judges found that the trial judge, Mr Justice Johnson, “had no jurisdiction” to refer the case against Menon to the High Court.

Campaign group Defend Our Juries (DoJ) said: “Rajiv Menon KC did what every defence barrister should be free to do – in discharging his duty to his client: he told a jury the truth about their own rights.”

“The fact that contempt of court proceedings were even brought against a barrister for his closing speech – for the first time in British legal history – should deeply concern everyone who cares about the rule of law,” the group added.

Menon had been accused of violating Johnson’s orders in the first trial of six activists who broke into an Israeli-owned arms factory near Bristol in 2024 at the height of the Gaza genocide.

He barred the lawyers from inviting the jury to disregard the court’s ruling of law or to acquit the defendants on the basis of conscience, known as the principle of jury equity.

Palestine Action Activists to Be Sentenced As Terrorists in Move Kept Secret From Jury and Public

A court will seek to sentence four Palestine Action activists found guilty of criminal damage at a site owned by Israel’s biggest weapons manufacturer as terrorists, even though they were not convicted of terror charges, Novara Media is now able to report.

The ‘terror connection’ was kept secret from the jury and UK media outlets were barred from reporting on this due to court-imposed restrictions, which were lifted on 12 May. This is believed to be the first case in British history where a court will attempt to sentence activists taking direct action as terrorists.

Judge Jeremy Johnson is expected to add a ‘terrorist connection’ to the charges of Charlotte Head, Samuel Corner, Leona (Ellie) Kamio and Fatema Rajwani under section 69 of the Sentencing Act 2020, despite the jury only convicting them of criminal damage and having no knowledge that a terror link could be later imposed.

Being sentenced as terrorists means the defendants could face significantly longer time in prison and be listed as terrorists upon release – imposing severe limitations on their lives. Most have already served 18 months on remand, with Corner incarcerated for 21 months.

In a preparatory hearing back in March 2025, the judge ruled that there appeared to be a ‘terrorist connection’ as the activists were attempting to influence the Israeli government by restricting its access to weapons.

Judge Johnson said: “On s1(1)(b) of the Terrorism Act 2000, Rajiv Menon KC and others strongly argued that influencing government was not the purpose of the action – the purpose of the action was to damage weapons and save lives. I accept that this was one motivating factor – but that does not mean that another purpose was not to damage property to be made available to the Israeli government and thereby influence the Israeli government.”
