Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivers his keynote speech to the Labour Party Conference at the ACC Liverpool, September 30, 2025
…
The flag-waving and standing ovations point to a rigged conference — with many delegates “deluded,” as one speaker from the floor at the Morning Star’s packed fringe meeting put it. Labour has become a hostile environment for the left — many socialist MPs stayed away, and the defeats inflicted on the government — such as over Palestine — were down to affiliated unions, not constituency party representatives.
Inside the hall many seemed to think compulsory digital ID cards were a brilliant policy, though it is almost impossible to find anyone who supports it in the real world. On the streets of Liverpool few had anything good to say about the party, and the mood of the protests at the conference gates — both the far right’s sizeable Sunday rally and the demonstrations for worthwhile causes such as opposing cuts to disability benefits — was grimmer and angrier than in previous years. There is real hatred for the government from the right, from the left, and among people who do not consider themselves political.
The disconnect is a product of Starmer’s most consistent political attribute — authoritarianism. Here is a leader who, unable to persuade Labour members to support his march to the right, used suspensions and expulsions to force it on the party, banning constituency parties even from debating contentious issues. Rule by fear has been extended to the country now he is in power — with mass arrests of peaceful demonstrators and a bid to decapitate the peace movement by charging its most prominent leaders. His withdrawal of the Labour whip from MPs who dare to stand up for their principles shows an unprecedented intolerance for dissent.

Mass Berlin demo illustrates growing divide between public and government position on genocide in Gaza.
Germany’s biggest demonstration to date in solidarity with Palestine brought more than 100,000 people into the streets of Berlin on Saturday, September 27. Initiated by a wide coalition of organizations – including Palestinian groups, peace and health associations, climate activists, and artists – the protest demanded an end to German-Israeli military cooperation and repression of solidarity movements, as well as support for Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
“We are taking to the streets to demand an immediate end to the genocide in Gaza and to stand up for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, freedom, and dignity,” Basem Said of the Palestinian community in Berlin said of the protest’s demands.
“While everyone can see the mass atrocities being committed by the Israeli army in Gaza, the German government denies the systematic violence,” the organizers wrote in their call. Framed this way, the march explicitly challenged the principle of Staatsräson, Germany’s self-declared “reason of state” tying much of its political identity to support for Israel.
The demonstration comes as the divide between public and governmental positions on this issue widens. Recent polling shows that a majority of Germans – 62% – believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. That figure rises to nearly 80% among supporters of the left party Die Linke and over 70% among those of the Greens and the Social Democrats. Yet the government continues to deepen ties with Israel even as other European administrations have made minor concessions under pressure from mass mobilizations, such as symbolic recognition of Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly’s high-level week.

Similar behavior continued in the days leading up to the protest. On September 25, for example, German Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche met with her Israeli counterpart, emphasizing the “unique, deep and multi-layered nature” of the cooperation between the two countries. “Israel’s economy is not only resilient but globally recognized for its cutting-edge technology, entrepreneurial spirit and vibrant start-up economy,” Reiche was quoted saying. By that date, Israel had killed at least 65,000 Palestinians in Gaza, with hundreds of thousands more suffering starvation and violent displacement.
“The German government continues to hold on to its cause and support the Israeli government,” said Dr. Khaled Hamad, one of the signatories of the initiative Together for Gaza (Zusammen für Gaza). “German involvement in the genocide against the Palestinians must be stopped, and double standards ended.”
The organizers and supporters of Saturday’s events were diverse. Coordinators of the central event included the Palestinian community in Germany, eye4palestine, Amnesty International Germany, and medico international, joined by Fridays for Future groups, the Genocide and Holocaust Studies Crisis Network, and Germans Against Genocide. They were echoed by journalists, writers, and left-wing political activists who launched the call for the demonstration. In total, dozens of organizations and initiatives participated in the preparation under the umbrellas of All Eyes on Gaza and Together for Gaza.
Demonstrations are expected to continue across Europe throughout October. In Germany, a peace protest is scheduled for the coming weekend, coinciding with German Unity Day. In Spain, Italy, Romania, Croatia, and other countries, actions in the following days will denounce government complicity after two years of genocide in Gaza and renew demands to end all ties with the occupation regime.

President Trump’s re-election had established the analysts’ worst fears about his policy on Gaza and Palestinian rights. Despite campaign promises of a halt to the Gaza war in days, his policies have systematically protracted the conflict and invited Israeli escalation.
Breaking promises, escalating violence
Trump’s policy change began the moment he took up residence in the White House. Not only did he abandon his commitment to swift peace, but he went so far as to undercut his predecessor’s restraints by selling Israel forbidden advanced weapons. More troubling still, he openly encouraged Netanyahu to escalate military actions with the apparent goal of purging Gaza’s 2.2 million residents—accompanied by the absurd concept of turning the land into a luxury holiday resort destination.
The president’s confused rhetoric provided Netanyahu with repeated opportunities and additional time to stretch operations, rather than employing adequate pressure for humanitarian access to Gaza’s suffering population. The recent joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London revealed the harsh reality of his position.
The hostage-centric approach
When questioned regarding Gaza, Trump visibly bristled, calling Hamas’s 7 October attacks “heinous and unforgivable crimes unprecedented in human history.” He emphasised that the top priority right now must be freeing all the hostages, both living and dead, “as quickly as possible.” Asked if hostage release would halt the war, his direct answer was simply: “Perhaps.”
This exchange exposed a chilling mathematics: Trump values 24 Israeli hostages’ lives utterly more than the lives of over two million Palestinians under constant bombardment that kills 70-100 individuals every day with American-supplied munitions. His utter devotion to population transfer, spurning Palestinian resistance to leave their homeland with “They will; we are in no hurry,” places the administration’s real motivations in relief.
Trump’s stance was made clear when the US used its sixth veto since 2003 on a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, release of prisoners, and access to humanitarian assistance in Gaza. The resolution received a unanimous vote from all other permanent members (Britain, France, Russia, and China) and non-permanent members, leaving America isolated in the blockade.
US Representative Morgan Ortagus justified the veto with stale arguments of Israel’s “right to self-defence” and claims that the resolution “equated Israel with Hamas.” These hollow excuses resonated especially callously as the representative of Denmark spoke of mothers boiling leaves to feed their children and fathers sorting through rubble to find food.
Algeria’s delegate, Amar Ben Jamaa, delivered arguably the most powerful words, reciting a list of apologies to the Palestinians: for the inaction of the Council to avoid the killing of over 18,000 children, 12,000 women slain, 4,000 older men slaughtered, 1,400 medical staff targeted, 250 journalists assassinated, and 500 aid personnel killed. He articulated the moral failure of the international community: “Israel kills and starves an entire people daily, and no one does anything about it.”
The Vatican’s alarming silence
America’s consistent support of Israel is a tradition going back to Lyndon Johnson’s time, while the Vatican position is an alarming departure from Catholic social teaching. In his recent interview, Pope Leo XIV revealed a cryptic dovetailing with US policy, at odds with the moral clarity of his predecessor.
While expressing “great concern” over Gaza, the Pope dismissed genocide charges, claiming “there’s a very technical definition about what genocide might be” and deeming the Holy See “not ready” to characterise Israel’s operation as genocidal. This claim contradicts, in direct terms, Pope Francis’s November 2024 genocide investigations appeal and overruled a 16 September UN Human Rights Council report documenting Israeli genocide in Gaza.
The Vatican’s withdrawal from moral leadership raises troubling questions about outside influence on Catholic policy. Has the Church surrendered its humanitarian mandate to political considerations, either under American pressure or internal Zionist lobbies?
The alignment of American political and Vatican moral influence in the cause of Israeli impunity is a profound failure of global institutions. When the world’s biggest democracy and the world’s oldest moral institution abandon Palestinian lives to safeguard Israeli interests, the entire edifice of human rights and global law falls apart.
Trump’s presidency has revealed that American assistance to Israel is more than just strategic interest—it is an ideological allegiance for which some lives matter more than others. The complicity of the Vatican is evidence that this moral hierarchy has spread even to institutions that profess to believe in universal human dignity.
As Gaza’s suffering continues with superpower approval and papal silence, the world witnesses not only Palestinian tragedy, but also the deconstruction of the moral foundations upon which global order is based.

The UN experts on Monday called on FIFA and UEFA to suspend Israel’s national football team from international competitions, saying it is a “necessary response to address the ongoing genocide in the occupied Palestinian territory,” Anadolu reports.
“The conclusion of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, that Israel is committing genocide is the latest in a growing number of international bodies affirming that genocide is being committed,” the experts said. They recalled that the International Court of Justice’s interim order of Jan. 26, 2024, reminded every country of its legal duty to act against genocide.
“Sports must reject the perception that it is business as usual,” they said. “Sporting bodies must not turn a blind eye to grave human rights violations, especially when their platforms are used to normalize injustices.”
The experts clarified that the call targets the state of Israel and not individual players, saying: “We have always maintained that individuals cannot bear the consequences of the decisions their government makes.”
They further urged FIFA to “stop legitimizing the situation arising from Israel’s unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” stressing: “There is a legal and moral imperative to take every measure possible to end the genocide in Gaza now.”

Mahmoud Khalil speaks at Palestine march following release (Photo: Wyatt Souers)
A US immigration judge has ordered the deportation of pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil to Algeria or Syria. In an order dated September 12, Louisiana Judge Jamee Comans leaned into Trump administration allegations that in his permanent residency application, Khalil failed to disclose his work with UNRWA and the Syria Office at the British Embassy in Beirut, along with his ties to a pro-Palestine student group at Columbia University. Comans thus denied Khalil’s application for a waiver of removability, a legal order that waives a particular ground for deportation, permitting an individual to stay in the United States, and ordered his deportation – in what her ruling states as “the interests of this country.”
“It is no surprise that the Trump administration continues to retaliate against me for my exercise of free speech. Their latest attempt, through a kangaroo immigration court, exposes their true colors once again,” said Mahmoud Khalil in response to the ruling. “When their first effort to deport me was set to fail, they resorted to fabricating baseless and ridiculous allegations in a bid to silence me for speaking out and standing firmly with Palestine, demanding an end to the ongoing genocide. Such fascist tactics will never deter me from continuing to advocate for my people’s liberation.”
Khalil’s team has already moved to challenge Comans’ order. On September 17, Khalil’s lawyers submitted a letter to the federal court in New Jersey which is overseeing Khalil’s civil rights case, explaining that Khalil will challenge Comans’s order.
“When the immigration prosecutor, judge, and jailor all answer to Donald Trump, and that one man is eager to weaponize the system in a desperate bid to silence Mahmoud Khalil, a US permanent resident whose only supposed sin is that he stands against an ongoing genocide in Palestine, this is the result,” said Ramzi Kassem, co-director of CUNY CLEAR (Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility), one of the organizations part of his legal team, which includes the ACLU, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Dratel & Lewis, Van Der Hout LLP, and Washington Square Legal Services. “A plain-as-day First Amendment violation that also puts on sharp display the rapidly freefalling credibility of the entire US immigration system.”
“We will win”: Khalil continues activism for Palestine
Since his release in June, Khalil has not once shied away from continuing his advocacy for Palestine. Only days after leaving an ICE detention facility in Jena, Louisiana, Khalil appeared on the steps of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Harlem, only blocks away from his alma mater of Columbia University. Khalil answered questions from the press while surrounded by hundreds of his fellow Columbia student activists and supporters from the pro-Palestine movement. When a journalist asked him what his message was to students who might be afraid to speak out based on what happened to him, Khalil firmly said “We will win.”
